To keep up, your players must think, move, and react quickly-without sacrificing efficiency. With the increase in positionless basketball, there's an increased demand for skilled basketball players regardless of their size.In this exclusive coaching video, Hall of Famer John Calipari shares his proven methods for training players to make the right decisions at game speed, communicate effectively, and play relentless defense. Using practice footage, Calipari shares drills designed to get players to play fast, score on three levels, and play with great footwork on defense. What You'll Learn: Playing Fast & Thinking Slow: Teach your team to process the game at high speed while staying composed.Developing Three-Level Scorers: Train players to score at the rim, from mid-range, and beyond the arc. Mastering Defensive Positioning: Keep the ball in front, eliminate unnecessary rotations, and build a disciplined unit.Effective Team Communication: Implement unique offensive calls that keep your opponents guessing.Game-Ready Drills: Use elite practice techniques to prepare players for real-game situations. Playing FastTo get your team to play fast, Calipari believes that you must practice at a fast pace. Your players' feet must be able to move fast while their minds have to slow down so that they can process everything at the increased tempo and pace of the game. This includes being able to make a decision in 0.6 seconds when catching the basketball. One way that Calipari gets his players to play at a faster pace is with the 2-on-0 Drive the Catch Drill. This drill has two players running down the floor on opposite sides with one of them getting a pass from the coach. On the catch, the player getting the pass drives to pass to his running mate before getting a second ball from the coach for a shot.Developing Three-Level Scorers Scoring in basketball is dominated by players who can get threes and lay-ups. However, these shots are not always available. Because of this, high-level offensive basketball players need to develop the ability to score on three levels. Three-level scorers not only make lay-ups and threes but can also make floaters.Drives are to score lay-ups or floaters first. This is demonstrated by the 3-on-3 Advantage Drill, a 'Calipari staple' drill. With the on-ball defender on the hip, the dribbler will look to attack the basket and either shoot a lay-up or floater to draw the help. When the help defense rotates to stop the drive, the dribbler can pass to either of his two teammates on the perimeter who will look for a shot or the "one-more" pass.Another aspect of being a high-level offensive player also includes communication. Calipari discusses his use of terminology being different including such terms as "Drop," "Loop," "One-More," and "Twirl."Developing DefenseA point of emphasis for Coach Calipari on the defensive end of the floor is to stay in front when guarding the basketball. When this happens, you don't have to worry about rotations. To work on this, "Lunges" and "Retreats" are worked on to develop on-ball defensive footwork to contain ball handlers and to avoid having to rotate on defense. Coach Calipari presents a smorgasbord of basketball knowledge that can be applied to developing more complete players regardless of what system you run on offense or defense. This video isn't just about X's and O's-it's about changing the way your team approaches the game!61 minutes. 2025.
