Modern offenses are rarely executed perfectly. Plays break down, players drift out of position, and defenses force teams into second and third actions. The difference between good offenses and great offenses is often determined by what happens after the initial play.

In this insightful presentation, Central Connecticut State head coach Patrick Sellers shares his complete system for teaching what he calls the "Play After the Play." Coach Sellers demonstrates how coaches can turn broken possessions into organized offensive advantages through clear teaching rules, repeatable concepts, and intelligent decision-making.

The presentation begins with the introduction of the Hitman and Moneyman framework, a teaching system designed to improve spacing, ball movement, and offensive decision-making. Coach Sellers builds these concepts progressively through simple 2-on-0 and 4-on-0 drills before adding defensive pressure and game-like situations. Players learn when to move, when to pass, and how to consistently create advantages within the natural flow of the offense.

A major component of the system is the Maydays action, a two-player concept that creates downhill attacking opportunities while reinforcing the core Hitman and Moneyman principles. Once installed, the action can be applied across multiple offensive situations, helping players recognize the same reads regardless of how the possession develops.

Coach Sellers also demonstrates how these concepts connect directly to post entries, kick-outs, offensive rebounds, and broken possessions. After a post touch, perimeter movement and screening actions create spacing, while kick-out passes immediately trigger offensive reactions that keep the attack connected and aggressive.

Additional instruction includes:

  • Teaching players how to recognize and avoid double-drive situations
  • Building basketball IQ through structured decision-making rules
  • Creating continuity after offensive rebounds and broken possessions
  • Applying movement rules after post entries to maintain spacing and flow
  • Organizing players into advantage situations without overcoaching every possession

Throughout the video, Coach Sellers emphasizes the concept of structured freedom. Players are given clear offensive principles while maintaining the freedom to read defenses and make the correct decisions in real time. This balance allows teams to remain efficient while playing with creativity, confidence, and purpose.

By the end of this presentation, coaches will have a complete framework for teaching players how to handle offensive breakdowns, maintain momentum, and consistently turn imperfect possessions into high-quality scoring opportunities.
