In today's football, it is estimated that teams are in 1 back, shotgun offenses over 65% of any game. For this reason, defensive coordinators are constantly in search of a way to defend 4 wide receivers on one play, and 2 tight ends the next.

It is no surprise, then, that the 34 defense is one of the most frequently used defenses in all of football, and for good reason. It offers diversity and adaptability for virtually any grouping an offense can put on the field.

With teams spreading out more and more, defensive coaches have long scrambled to find a defense that can stay sound against anything an offense can put on the field. From 10 personnel to 22, the diversity of today's offense can be a problem.

The Base 34 defense, at its core, is a simple solution to these problems. Even in the age of the Spread Offense - in fact, perhaps because of the spread offense - the 34 is as popular today as it was 25 years ago. With the ability to play multiple coverages from a 2 high shell, while also fitting the run, it's no wonder Cover 2 is a staple in most defensive coordinators' playbooks.
