Success has followed head coach Mark Byington at each of his coaching stops, where he has inherited programs with losing records and turned them into some of the best in the country.

Coach Byington reviews some of the most recent offensive trends in basketball:

  • 5-Out Offense
  • Weakside options
  • Ball screening actions
  • Ball screening continuity
  • And more!

Coach Byington will get you thinking for the upcoming season by showing you the concepts and tools to succeed on offense!

5-Out Spacing
Coach Byington begins by discussing the trend of playing 5 players on the perimeter. He shows the spacing and spots that players are expected to occupy as well as the most common actions within the 5-out set. Several DHO actions are presented including how to attack switches and getting your post player involved.

Weakside Movement
One overlooked aspect of any offense is what to do on the weakside of the ball to occupy the defense. Five different options are outlined from baseline cuts, flare screens, and more. The better your players are practiced in the art of weakside movement, the better your offense will flow.

3-man Spacing
The 3-man spacing is a concept where the deep corners are filled and the main action is being carried out by your three best players at the top of the arc. Multiple “get” actions, as well as playing through your post player and stacking two players at the free throw line to initiate ball screens or DHO’s.

Ball Screen Continuity
Lastly, you will see a commonly run 5-out ball screening continuity. Coach Byington likes to run this against teams that play a drop coverage. Two different schemes are shown with Flow High and Flow Low to adjust to your personnel or your opponent. Time is also spent showing and discussing ghost actions.

Stay up to date with the latest trends in basketball with Coach Byington and have your team ready to surprise your opponents this year!

In Vanderbilt's Coach Byington video, there is tons of content covered in just a short amount of time. All of the
information shared, demonstrated, and discussed is incredibly valuable for coaches who are working at a
more advanced level to build their offensive systems of play for their team and program. The structure of
the video is handled in a way that allows all coaches to learn about these systems and concepts through
demonstration and discussion. I would recommend this video to any coach looking to grow and
expand their offensive systems of play in the ever-changing and positionless style that is taking over
today’s offensive systems. By learning and growing in these areas, coaches can take their team to the
next level by developing and executing these different styles of play within their team/program’s offensive
system. Really excellent instructional value!

It is a fine video with some ideas but nothing earth shattering.
