Boston University Head Women's Coach (2018-2021);
2019 Patriot League Coach of the Year;
University of Connecticut Assistant Coach with Geno Auriemma (2009-2018)

In this video, you will learn about the preferred practice drills of Wisconsin head women's coach, Marisa Moseley! Coach Moseley goes through a variety of drills that she uses in warm-ups and throughout her practices. She communicates what she's looking for in each drill, when she uses the drill in practice, and what purpose the drill serves during her practice.

Warming Up

To kick things off, Moseley talks about the warm-up drills that are used as part of daily work in practice. She talks about how the skills used in these drills will translate to game situations. Coach Moseley has different options and variations of these drills based on what the focus is for her team that day/practice. An emphasis is placed on transitions from drill to drill. This is important because it sets the foundation for skills needed to master the game of basketball. You'll see drills like:

  • Two Lines (layups)
  • Three Lines (layups)
  • Box (bank shots & box outs)
  • Long and Short (transition)
  • Suns Drill (passing, cutting)
  • and more!

Competitive Drills

Coach Moseley describes passing and competitive shooting drills that her teams use for offensive breakdowns. These drills help to simulate different actions that they use during a game. Each drill is competitive and goals are set to add intensity and urgency. Within her drills, Moseley emphasizes communication and teamwork in order to provide her players with areas of focus as they improve their skills.

This video is for coaches of all levels looking for drills to add to their practices that will further their players' skill development. Coach Moseley does a tremendous job introducing each drill, and describing the drills in an easy and understandable way. These are great drills that you can implement immediately!

Coach Moseley tells you up front that if have any of Coach Auriemma (UConn) videos, you have some of her drills down and she was not kidding. The first three drills after she talks about her practice philosophy, which is a really good idea for coaches, are three UConn staples; Two Lines, Three Lines, and Three Lines to Box. She has two more UConn practice drills that will look familiar towards the end of the video.

Thing that I liked about the video:
1). The details of the drills and the Hows and Whys of the drill.

2). Drills were not position specific. Post players were doing the same drills as Perimeter players. I really like that mindset. That way after 2,3,4 years if a player hasn't improved their handles or footwork, you really can't blame the coach too much.

3). Drill Progression. Always good to see progression of a drill. This helps everyone.

4). Pace. Short segments but with great details and instructions.

4 Star Rating.
