In addition to being one of the most successful NCAA Division 1 basketball coaches in today's game, John Tauer is a tenured psychology professor at St. Thomas. Coaching Philosophy
Coach Tauer challenges you to decide what you represent and what you want to be important in your program. He reviews key data points that many coaches know are important but may fail to dive deeply into; for instance, he examines the concept of passing within the game. He points out that if your team averages 5 passes that lead to turnovers throughout the game, your team is below average in their ability to care for the ball and create advantageous situations. He also examines the idea of the core of 'off ball action'. Tauer's process is designed to help you as a coach understand what the heart of 'off ball action' is so that you can better teach what you want your players to execute in your 'off ball action'.

ATO's
Coach Tauer then begins to go into his ATO sets. Whether it be in the half court, sideline out-of-bounds, or baseline out-of-bounds, Coach Tauer's teams consistently rank as one of the most efficient teams in ATO settings. At his core, Coach Tauer encourages his players to keep it simple. His sets reflect the actions that he wants his team to have mastered. In each scenario, Tauer shows you how to achieve this with the set he demonstrates. He also points out that by keeping the concepts simple, you increase your ability to execute and adjust. By 'not fighting' the defense your team will become more efficient as well.

Late Game Situations
Coach Tauer concludes the video by repping several end of game situations. You will see his instruction and approach to each of these situations. He not only tells you what he is doing, but he tells you why. By incorporating this into the video, Coach Tauer will once again help you to reflect and discover who you are as a coach in each scenario.
