In Physiotherapy Secrets for Ice Recovery & Injury Prevention, Coach Shelia Burrell and Physiotherapist/Physical Therapist/Osteopath Samara Gregorio pull back the curtain on the effective strategies they employ with San Diego State University women's track & field athletes.  In this video, they address physiotherapy “secrets'' they use to put each athlete in the best possible position to succeed.

Their bar for performance is set extremely high.  Most coaches overlook the importance of a holistic approach to athlete preparation as an integral part of a training plan. Burrell and Gregorio show how they approach this; they maintain that it is the coach’s responsibility to help the athlete recover rather than leave it to someone else.

Recovery can start before training by preparing an athlete for their event(s).  Athletes can be treated with a combination of hot and cold water therapy pre-practice, to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system in anticipation of the day’s work.  Gregorio and Burrell show you ‘how’ and explain the ‘why.’

And as much as they explain the what, where, when and why of the methods and means of recovery, a huge takeaway from all of this information can be found in this important protocol: “The evaluation of the individual athlete in their current state, with observation and open communication, gathering enough information to make the appropriate decision for that time, keeping in mind the goal.”

The old days of sport coaches sending athletes to the trainer to recover or arbitrarily applying various means of recovery without thought, are gone.

In this breakthrough paradigm shift, Coaches Burrell and Gregorio show you a peek into the future of coaching your athletes.

They share ways to effectively treat one’s athletes that also address limitations in equipment and expense, showing you best case scenarios but also presenting sensible alternatives for coaches with limited resources.  They also provide guidance for the practical application and duration of the therapies they demonstrate.

This is not a step-by-step plan - but, this video contains a huge amount of information to expertly guide coaches seeking the best solutions for their athletes.

Ms. Gregorio has been on the leading edge of athlete care and demonstrates many ways to apply ice and massage to the athlete.  Many subtle yet effective ways to apply means of therapy throughout the training process on a daily, even a minute-by-minute-between-reps basis, are shared.

Burrell’s athletes demonstrate some of the various therapies.  Of particular interest is the reactions of the athletes to the therapy.  They all mention they feel ‘refreshed;’ a refreshed athlete is a healthy, high performing and capable athlete!

The ‘proof is in the pudding’ - as Coach Burrell says, “A huge part of our success at San Diego State, with our low injury rate, is just being intentional and meaningful in everything we do.”  Coaches, read that.  Then read it again! SDSU’s sustained success can be attributable to: ‘low injury rate’ and ‘being intentional and meaningful in everything they do’!

Since Burrell came to SDSU, the Aztecs have won 5 conference championships (three of the past four contested).  At the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Aztecs’ 4x100m relay team made SDSU the only non-power five conference team to make four of the last five NCAA championships in the 4x100m relay!  SDSU track & field athletes can also be found competing in international and Olympic T&F events.

This video is a must-have for any coach!  You will learn something new each time you view it.  There are so many pearls of wisdom sprinkled throughout it. Especially enjoyable is the back and forth dialogue between the ‘dynamic duo’ of Shelia Burrell and Samara Gregorio, as they discuss training.

Coaches - THIS IS THE FUTURE OF TRAINING and an excellent insider’s view into a high performing, well-organized and well-coached athletic program that any coach can benefit from!

Customer Reviews: 5 Stars

“This video is EXCELLENT!!! It is well produced and packs a ton of information!

I have watched it a few times now and will watch more!”

“It is refreshing to see a coach approach training in a comprehensive manner.  Clearly Coach Burrell is the program manager, not just the coach.  And her work hand-in-hand with Samara Gregorio is an excellent example of a coach working with, in this case, a physiotherapist, in relentless pursuit of the best approach to training her team!”

Restorative Practices

To perform at their best, athletes need to accomplish challenging workouts. However, these workouts often create residual soreness or fatigue lasting multiple days. In this section, Coach Burrell breaks down her recovery-themed practices to help her athletes bridge the gap between challenging workouts. These workouts include postural drills that create low-intensity teaching moments, stretching, and ice bathing to help athletes feel better throughout the week.

Meet and Practice Recovery Strategies

Athletes must often recover quickly throughout meets and practices to prepare for their next rep or event. In this segment, viewers will learn various quick restoration activities, such as rinsing the mouth with water, icing down, and deep breathing to help create a parasympathetic response and prepare the athlete for their next rep.

Incorporating Diaphragmatic Breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing can serve as a recovery strategy post-workout and improve breathing quality during practices and competition, relieving tension and enabling athletes to focus on the task. In this segment, coaches will learn how important a role the diaphragm plays in breath work and learn how to effectively control it for enhanced performance.

This video is an essential resource for coaches seeking to help their athletes enhance their recovery to get the most from their athletic performances. Coaches can adapt strategies included within various sports and situations and benefit coaches across multiple disciplines.

Diaphragm Training:

Before heading to the pool, Coach Burrell’s athletes demonstrate various post-practice diaphragm training exercises, including breathing, stretches, and self-tension release. Athletes can learn to reduce stress, promote holistic well-being, and improve recovery by training the diaphragm.

Dynamic Warm-ups for the Pool:

Dynamic warm-ups are essential for enhancing an athlete’s range of motion, building strength in small muscle groups, and preparing the body for intense activity. By performing these exercises in the pool, athletes can enhance the quality of their workout while minimizing impact. In this segment, Coach Burrell walks viewers through her dynamic pool warm-up and provides insights into her exercise selection, helping viewers understand the importance of each drill.

Adapting Workouts for the Pool

In this segment, Jesse Chapman (SDSU Jumps Coach) makes a cameo to break down jumper-specific training that incorporates low-level plyometrics in the water with various bodyweight exercises on the deck to deliver a high-intensity workout that is also low-impact. Coach Burrell also breaks down a tempo workout she does with her sprinters, creating high-quality training while minimizing the stresses to the body that occur on hard surfaces like the track.

Throughout the video, Coach Burrell and her staff expertly break down their pool training sessions, providing insights, coaching cues, and various drills to help their athletes gain that competitive advantage while minimizing impact forces and promoting better recovery.

This video is a must-have for any track and field coaches with pool access and is an excellent resource for coaches seeking methods to enhance recovery and increase their athletes’ performance!
