Jamie Rice is back with his third Games to Teach the Game video and once again provides a resource that will raise the excitement level of your team's practices by engaging your players on the ice with what they love the most - competing and playing the game they love! By implementing Coach Rice's games, your athletes will look forward to the start of practice and will have a fulfilling and beneficial experience every time they step on the ice. This video includes 14 games that will bring out the best in your players and provide a strong carryover effect in how your team plays when the lights come on.

Games

Coach Rice uses the Pertti game as a great warm-up drill to get a lot of players active and moving throughout the ice and without boundaries. Athletes read and react to each other and work on unscripted problem solving skills, which they constantly need to develop as they play.

The Numbers game is a progression game that tackles one of hockey's biggest challenges. In today's game players are swarmed under pressure, sometimes facing one verses two or three players. The Numbers game allows for athletes to rehearse puck possession skills under pressure and find ways to end with positive puck touches and opportunities. Starting out 1v3 and progressing to 2v3 and 3v3 allows your players to work from puck possession to puck support skills.

And More Games

Among the many games Coach Rice includes in this video, perhaps the best is the Royal Line. The Royal Line is a common term used to divide the ice in half and emphasize the need to move the puck from one side of the rink to the other. There is a trend in hockey now to get pucks across the Royal Line to get the goalie moving and perhaps not square or set for shots - it moves defenders out of their defensive zone house and ultimately creates more offense and scoring. Offensive players learn puck support while spreading out the defending team in this educational drill.

The best part about Coach Rice's games is that instead of focusing on one skill in a given drill, they work to improve multiple skills at once, including:

  • Skating and puck handling in tight areas, puck protection, and puck support
  • Skills without the puck, including retrievals, back-checking and finding open ice
  • Hockey IQ, which separates good players from great ones at higher levels of the game

This video is essential for coaches who want to bring excitement to their practices. By exposing your players to game situations created in advance, they'll be able to adjust, adapt and problem solve in the heat of competition. Coach Rice gives you exactly what you need to develop athletes who are quick thinkers and love to compete!
