with Steve Greatwood,
University of California, Berkeley Offensive Line Coach;
former University of Oregon Assistant Head Coach - Running Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach; American Football Coaches Association National Offensive Line Coach of the Year (2008)

Have you wondered how the Oregon offense can line up and come off the ball so quickly and run the ball so effectively? Join longtime Oregon Coach Steve Greatwood as he discusses the concepts and techniques that have made Oregon's Inside Zone play so successful.

In this DVD, he will explain how to:

  • Streamline the communication up front when running an up-tempo offense
  • Identify the defensive front in the blink of an eye
  • Teach zone blocking technique whether covered or uncovered
  • Identify a "point" defender and work simple line rules off of his alignment

The incredibly fast tempo of the Oregon offense puts enormous pressure on the defense. In a clinic setting, Coach Greatwood teaches the inside zone concepts of the devastating Duck ground attack. The key to the zone running attack is the call from the center identifying the "point" defender; everyone else works from the center's call. You'll learn the "red" call, which identifies the three-technique side of the defense and the "white" call, which is used when there is a guard bubble. Using this information, the zone play may be run to a particular color as the entire line works together as one unit.

Coach Greatwood shares blocking rules for various defensive fronts, including the odd man front, the odd stack or 3-3 defense, and the "bear" front. Game footage is coached up as Greatwood covers the calls and techniques of each lineman giving you an opportunity to see how everything ties together.

Whether you are using an athletic quarterback and reading zone, running zone with fast screen concepts or blocking backside, this DVD is a must have.

65 minutes. 2013.

Coach Greatwood does an excellent job of going over the numbering system at Oregon for the offensive line. If there is a criticism, it is the filming of the video. Many times instead of showing the powerpoint as Coach explains things on the powerpoint, the cameraman focuses on the talking head of Coach. It didn't happen that often, but it was annoying at times. Overall, the content on the numbering system was really top notch. Would definitely recommend this video.

This is a decent, though general, breakdown of some finer points of the zone run game. I was disappointed with the lack of depth on some topics (like how they use the Red/White calls in games, or the teaching progression they use). There are, however, some awesome nuggets about how they teach specific techniques.

Video is interesting but basically covers only numbering system. I find a bit expensive compared to other clinic videos i bought which cover more subjetc about OL.

Still a buy....but expensive for a 60 minutes vid on which Coach Greatwood seems in a hurry to finish.

Not at all as the title implies. Counting system explained. Mostly inside zone discussed. No drills. Expected more. Very disappointed.

Lots of discussion re: Inside Zone. Little to none re: Outside Zone. Counting system could be confusing to HS OL working uptempo. Speaking of which there was no discussion about an uptempo system. No drills. Some technique discussion. DVD title is misleading.

Very smart coach, but hard to follow with the limited amount of visual aids. Tempo of the video is pretty fast and hurried.

Lots of good ideas in this video, however the question an answer period was non existent. The film part of the video was excellent but seemed to be rushed through. The coach seemed to be rushed to get through the seminar. I don’t know if it was because of the venue or he just wanted to get through the clinic. This type of session (part of a scheduled clinic), in my opinion should not be used for a teaching video. It appears to be a rushed job in a clinic to make a few extra bucks beside what he was paid for the clinic.
Demonstration was poor and haphazard. All in all a weak video that contains some valuable information but poor presentation.

If you love coaching the offensive line then you will love this DVD. I used what Coach Greatwood presented and utilizing many of teaching points that is presented and improvising on others I have definitely notice that the kids do communicate with each other better and as a result they do play faster because they are all on the same page. It is everything the title of the DVD states. Money well spent.
