with Chris Ross, Prosper (TX) High School Head Coach,
former head coach at Cedar Park (TX) High School where he won 70 percent of games; 3x Central Texas Coaches Association Coach of the Year

Coach Chris Ross takes a look at the option run game and the way it's been used, past and present.

Using Coach Ross' concepts, you don't need an elite running back, a strong arm quarterback or huge offensive lineman to develop an all-in-one offensive philosophy that makes defenses play the entire field, while still allowing you to capitalize on the their weaknesses. The Gun Option lets you use your best athletes in multiple formations while using simple motions and shifts to ensure that the defense never gets comfortable. The play action portion illustrates the ease and effectiveness of passing from the Gun while still using the option to help create a balanced aerial attack. All of this is simple to implement in practice and in game situations, it requires only minor adjustments to remain highly effective.

Using PowerPoint slides and whiteboard diagrams, Coach Ross gives an in-depth analysis of the outside/inside zone option run and play action passing from the Gun formation. He uses game footage and provides a step-by-step breakdown of the outside/inside zone run to show how to incorporate a play action passing attack that yields significant results. His concepts allow any offensive coordinator with a highly effective and potent outside/inside zone running attack to offset any defense.

In sequence, Coach Ross shares a complete analysis of outside/inside zone run and play action pass concepts with key coaching points and game time adjustments. The 6/7 Zone Option is covered first as Coach Ross diagrams the outside zone blocking rules that will stop any defensive front or stunt package. The quarterback reads it like outside zone, with Ross detailing options if the defensive end stretches, or if the edge is reached. Next, Coach Ross covers play action off of the play with the "Washington Zone Crack," a devastating pass play that puts secondary support players in conflict to stop the run.

The 8/9 Arc Option uses the same blocking inside but adds a crack and lead scheme on the perimeter of the defense. Coach Ross shows how to use an unbalanced line to create numbers in the option game with the 6/7 Break Option. Gator or 16/17 Option gives the offense an effective counter option play that incorporates a gap blocking scheme keeping the pitch key the same for the quarterback. Next you'll see a double option that once again uses the outside zone blocking scheme, allowing for great execution with no mental errors. Each option has a play action pass and a drill to teach the play.

Coach Ross effectively breaks down the option drill while teaching the blocking rules of the outside/inside zone against even and odd fronts. Also, he shares key coaching points on how to practice the Gun option offense and merging individual skills to game-time practice execution.

Coach Ross shows how the Base Zone Option play can be modified to create play action passes and counter plays for long touchdowns. His easy-to-understand methodology assists coaches in learning the dynamic play action passing that is a direct complement to the Gun Option run game and doesn't require fast receivers or a strong-armed quarterback Instead, it utilizes vertical, switch, and double-crossing routes forcing defenses to cover the entire field.

This presentation gives an in-depth understanding of fundamentals, principles, and concepts of the highly versatile Gun Option and play action. Coach Ross has a simple philosophy of attacking the defense with a variety of looks using the same plays repeatedly, allowing for superior execution with the ability to play at lightning speed.
