Learn the Three Main Man-to-Man Techniques

Coach O'Rourke delivers an outstanding overview of how he teaches man coverage to his players starting with stance and alignment, and finishing with how defensive backs should react to the ball in the air. Coach O'Rourke explains the finer points of how he teaches press, off, and catch techniques to his players using a PowerPoint presentation as well as practice video examples of each technique.

In the press-man segment, special emphasis is placed on how important footwork is to defensive back play and why it's important to teach footwork before teaching the jam. Coach O'Rourke shows examples of a mirror drill and a press release drill in which the technique is broken into smaller parts so the athletes can focus on the correct technique.

  • Learn how Coach O'Rourke teaches his players to shuffle then kick-slide to maintain proper position against the receiver's release.
  • Learn the two to one to none jam progression to dominate the receiver.
  • Learn how to stem pedal against the receivers stem when playing off coverage to maintain position.
  • See how Coach O'Rourke teaches his players to stay square until contact when playing catch man.

Learn How to Win When the Ball is in the Air

Coach O'Rourke details how he teaches his players using an effective drill to simulate the receiver's break at the top of the route, and how the defensive back should react determined by leverage.

Also, you will see a detailed explanation of how to finish with the ball in the air depending on if the defensive player is in-phase or out-of-phase.

Several examples using practice videos are shown to illustrate each coaching point.

  • Learn how to teach your players to play the ball when both in-phase and out-of-phase.
  • Learn a unique drill to simulate how to react to both inside and outside breaking routes.
  • Learn how Coach O'Rourke teaches the "scrape" technique to help his players get their hands back into the correct position after making contact with the receiver.

This is a great addition to any secondary coach's video library! Coach O'Rourke gives a detailed presentation of the finer points of man-to-man defensive back play that will benefit all levels of coaches.
