Mark Teague, head coach and athletic director at Bolton High School in Louisiana, delivers a great overview on why his program adopted the single wing offense and how it helped them become more competitive. In this video, Teague breaks down the evolution of Bolton's single wing offense, the personnel needed to run the offense, and also covers the most common formations and terminology that you need to implement the single wing within your own program.

Single Wing Introduction and Personnel

As Coach Teague says, the single wing offense is a physical brand of football. Leaning heavily on a ground-and-pound approach, the single wing gives you an advantage because opponents have a hard time preparing for it since they are likely more accustomed to guarding spread formations that have grown in popularity recently. Because the single wing is a physical approach, as time ticks away in games, your opponents' will will be taken away as they struggle to counter the smash mouth style.

In order to set the stage, Teague breaks down the base personnel needs of the single wing offense prior to covering the traits that are desired for every position. Thanks to this section, you'll be able to easily identify and plug in the players on your roster that fit each position.

Formations and Terminology

With personnel needs taken care of, you can begin implementing the formations that make up the bread and butter of the single wing offense. Coach Teague covers essential formations like the 9 formation, 8 formation, bear formation and spinner formation in detail. He also gives you formation shifts to help you further confuse the defense.

To close out the video, you'll get the terminology that Teague uses with his team that helps simplify communication in practice and on game day.

This video is a great place to start if you have interest in running the single wing offense. Coach Teague has experienced success on the field with his team running the single wing, and knows exactly what's needed to keep your offense moving the ball forward all game long!

Single Wing Offense: Pass ConceptsSingle Wing Offense: Pass Concepts

with Mark Teague,
Bolton High School (LA) Head Coach & Athletic Director;
former The Howard School of Academics and Technology (TN) Head Coach;

While the ground game is the emphasis for Mark Teague's single wing offense at Bolton High School, he understands that in order to maximize his team's effectiveness, they must keep the defense honest by threatening through the air as well. In this video, you'll learn about the pass concepts used by Coach Teague that can be peppered into a ground-and-pound approach to hit opponents when they're least expecting it.

Philosophy and Routes

Teague starts by explaining that the goal of being able to pass in his single wing offense is to take advantage of when the defense stacks the box, which often opens up deep passing opportunities with receivers running wide open. Additionally, giving kids the option to pass the ball on occasion can serve as a fun opportunity in an offense that otherwise wants to be run-oriented. Various routes are diagrammed by Coach Teague, and are broken down by depth: quick, intermediate, and deep.

Pass Plays

Once he's done breaking down the routes used in his offense, Teague moves on to explaining how those routes are implemented in full plays. Slant, out, and curl routes are the quick routes covered. Waggle, 12, and 13 are the intermediate routes. And finally, 4 verts, switch, and choice are the deep routes. Coach Teague does a nice job breaking down how to make every route effective as a receiver by using correct timing and technique.

Every team should be able to pass the ball when the opportunity presents itself, even if the focus of your offense is on running the ball. This video from Coach Teague will give you some great ideas for how to pass the ball out of a single wing offense.
