No Huddle Pistol Offense: InstallationNo Huddle Pistol Offense: Installation
with Brian Frana,
Southwest Minnesota State University Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach

In his first season at Southwest Minnesota State, Coach Frana helped build an offense (using five new starters on the offensive line) that averaged 400 yards and 27 points per game. He joined SMSU after spending five seasons as offensive coordinator at Upper Iowa University, where his squad set 26 offensive records during his tenure. In his last two years at Upper Iowa, his offense averaged more than 460 yards per game.

Brian Frana breaks down the installation and development of a no huddle pistol spread offense. He focuses on developing quick and effective signals for communication between coaches and players, while providing multiple tempos to keep opposing defenses on their toes. Coach Frana also talks through game film to help illustrate the points he makes in the video.

Formations and Terminology

One key to the development of a no huddle system is the use of signals and terminology to streamline your play selections. Coach Frana discusses the formations and terminology required to get your playmakers in the right position to create mismatches against opposing defenses. You'll learn how hand signals designate the offensive formations.

Coach Frana shows you how easily you can get your players into a variety of looks while keeping it simple. He details the tags that will allow you to move one player within each look, which causes more stress on the defense. Four types of motions are signaled as well; across, in, orbit and return - all of which allow you to move any receiver to a location you desire.

Geography is the theme for calling the offense as Coach Frana shows you how simple the system can be for your players. Colors designate the direction and the pass protection for the offensive line.

Offensive Tempo Packages

Changing the tempo at the line of scrimmage is a huge part of today's game. Coach Frana breaks down how to identify various fronts to make quick adjustments while in the no huddle. He shows you his Fire, Stir and Look tempos to attack the defense in a variety of ways. The tempos allow you to run a play as quickly as the referee can spot the ball, or allow you to slow down the game and milk the clock.

Coaches who want to learn the no huddle pistol offense will love this video. In it, you'll get a simple call system, learn to speed up your offense and understand how to beat any defense.

No Huddle Pistol Offense: Zone Run GameNo Huddle Pistol Offense: Zone Run Game
with Brian Frana,
Southwest Minnesota State University Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach

In his first season at Southwest Minnesota State, Coach Frana helped build an offense (using five new starters on the offensive line) that averaged 400 yards and 27 points per game. He joined SMSU after spending five seasons as offensive coordinator at Upper Iowa University, where his squad set 26 offensive records during his tenure. In his last two years at Upper Iowa, his offense averaged more than 460 yards per game.

Brian Frana uses a PowerPoint and game footage to break down the inside zone run play for the no huddle pistol spread offense. One key to the development of the inside zone run play is to understand all of the aiming points and blocking schemes for the offensive linemen. Coach Frana breaks down the inside zone essentials and shows how various formations and positions on the field can dictate different angles for your lineman.

Zone Run Basics

The number one rule is no two gap movement, meaning Coach Frana teaches vertical zone blocking up front. This concept establishes a downhill demeanor with the offensive line, and the running back is instructed to "push the point" before they can cut. The offensive line zone blocks off of the declaration of the center's "ID" of the Mike linebacker.

Inside Zone Scheme

Coach Frana covers multiple ways to move the ball versus any defensive scheme. The Straight Zone play is shown first, and game video is used to point out the details of the play. You'll see Coach Frana discuss the following variations:

  • The Straight Zone Seal - A compliment play that seals the backside "C" gap with either a wide receiver or wing player.
  • Read Zone with a run pass option - This play is the same up front for the offensive line, but gives the offense an opportunity to read the defense for a run or pass.
  • Read Zone Seal - A counter play that is a direct hand-off with no QB read.
  • Read Zone Slip - Creates a QB wrap play on any pull read.

Coach Rana's instruction will help you fine-tune and adjust your inside zone scheme to create play action and vertical pass play conversions. Perfect for coaches of the pistol offense at any level!

No Huddle Pistol Offense: Offensive Line FundamentalsNo Huddle Pistol Offense: Offensive Line Fundamentals
with Brian Frana,
Southwest Minnesota State University Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach

In his first season at Southwest Minnesota State, Coach Frana helped build an offense (using five new starters on the offensive line) that averaged 400 yards and 27 points per game. He joined SMSU after spending five seasons as offensive coordinator at Upper Iowa University, where his squad set 26 offensive records during his tenure. In his last two years at Upper Iowa, his offense averaged more than 460 yards per game.

Developing a solid offensive line starts with a daily teaching progression that emphasizes strong fundamentals. Using several different drills, Brian Frana shows you how to create a powerful run game in the pistol offense. Being able to run the ball will open up the passing game, and Coach Frana also illustrates pass blocking drills and how to incorporate them into your practices.

Basic Progression

Coach Frana discusses his goals and expectations for his offensive lineman. Working from the ground up, he teaches "positive steps" on the inside zone, which creates movement on the defensive line. He explains that a good offensive lineman starts at the bottom and develops upward.

Coach Frana also believes that a good stance begins with foot placement and ends with the face leading the way to the fit point. By using Coach Frana's technique, your offensive lineman will be in proper position and have less head injuries using his heads-up style.

Run Game Drills

Linemen need to use proper aiming points and angles in order to create a strong push off the line for running lanes. Coach Frana discusses six drills he uses every day to improve his players' footwork and hands:

  • Footwork on Air
  • 6 Point Explosion and Lift
  • 1 Step Strike
  • 2 Step Strike
  • Lead/Zone Drive and Lift
  • Strain

Practice footage is reviewed to illustrate proper ways to do each drill. You'll learn why footwork is so important, proven by Coach Frana starting every practice with footwork on air. An emphasis is put on the "angle of departure" in all footwork drills that cover the Lead, Zone, Drop, Skip and a Flat Pull. In these drills, offensive lineman learn how far and where to step with each foot for different types of blocks.

Pass Game Drills

The passing game is becoming more prevalent in football, which is why it is important to have offensive lineman that can protect the quarterback. Coach Frana demonstrates four drills that he uses in every practice to improve the footwork of his players. Using bags, sleds and partners, Coach Frana establishes how to help players get in proper position with their hands and feet. Quick hands are essential for linemen, and you'll learn the quick hands drill with a bag to help improve your offensive lineman's hands.

This video will help you create an aggressive offensive line that takes control against opposing defenses. The drills taught by Coach Frana will help develop any offensive lineman into the best player they can be.
