Ways to Enhance Your Full & Half Court Defense

Dan Muller is a defensive-minded coach and his teams have been some of the best in the country when it comes to defensive efficiency. He teaches his players defense through the use of stats in order to build a strong defensive culture. In this video, Muller describes a few of his concepts both in the half court and in the full court that have made his teams so successful on defense in order to help youstrengthen your team's effectiveness.

Full Court 2-2-1

A 2-2-1 full court press can be a great way to control the tempo of a game. It's not a high-risk style of defense, but can be quite useful and effective. Coach Muller demonstrates how he uses a 2-2-1 defense to mix things up against his team's opponents. By applying pressure on the ball to start, you can force your opponent to play right into your style.

Muller describes how each line has to work together and not be too far apart or too close together in order to be most effective. In 22 Top, you'll see how to force the ball handler into a trapping situation using the top line of your defense. In 22 side, Coach Muller teaches players how to force sideline and trap using the sideline players to trap the ball handler.

Out of Bounds Defense

In order to stifle your opponents' special situation baseline out of bounds plays, Muller teaches how to set up your defense to look like a zone and take away the best scoring opportunities from underneath the basket. Taking your post players and putting them on the ball and in the middle of the lane to help clog up any ball-side cutters allows you to put your most athletic players in spots where they cancover more ground. Once the ball is in, players quickly "fix it" and get into a more traditional man-to-man look, putting pressure on the offense right away.

Half Court

Coach Muller finishes off his defensive concepts by describing drills and concepts his team focuses on in the half court. In Warrior Closeout, players work on their closeout technique and closing out from different spots on the floor. Players focus on their push step and stopping the driver from attacking the basket. In 3 Line Closeout, athletes work on positioning after they close out to the ball.
