A good match-up zone defense can cause problems that will keep coaches up all night. In this informative video, 2x Big XII Champion Coach Bruce Weber discusses the system he’s developed for attacking match-up zone defenses through a variety of patterns and concepts.

In this in-depth instructional video, you will get offensive concepts for match-up zone offense, actions, patterns, shooting drills and highly adaptable set plays – all designed to dissect and attack the toughest of match-up zone defenses.

Match-Up Zone Offense

In the beginning of this video, Coach Weber shares his unique and important perspective on coaching and growing within the profession, including why it’s important to have a ‘one-day contract’ mentality, how to utilize assistants, the value of continual learning and adaptation, creating player buy-in, being true to yourself and why coaches must always stay reflective.

Weber then dives deep into Match-Up Zone Offense, beginning with the important concepts of spacing, player movement and ball movement, as well as other key questions coaches should ask themselves when designing any offense. As he describes the important initial elements of this offense, Weber emphasizes the key aspects of pushing the ball in transition and actions your players can take to flatten out the defense.Showing viewers the important spots, or ‘windows’ as Weber calls them, to utilize against match-up zone defenses, he builds upon the importance of movement and why each window of space needs to be occupied once vacated, as well as highlights different optional spots for post players in the paint and short corners. Weber describes the critical elements of having your point guard push or drive the ball up the court and provides details for different options and movements within his match-up zone offense – such as skip passes, short-corner entries and ball reversals. The misdirection dribble is also highlighted as an important concept within the offense and Weber shows how to create as many scoring opportunities as possible, including using a shooter to run the baseline as a deadly counter.

Once Weber shows the basic movements of his Match-Up Zone Offense, he provides viewers with add-ons that include different actions, such as using ball screens as an important option to create open shots and highly effective 2-on-1 scenarios. Other valuable topics covered in this section include: utilizing double ball-screens, using drags in transition and how to best use the Horns alignment within the offense to get maximum scoring opportunities.

Shooting Drills, Set Plays

One of the best ways to make your man-to-man or zone offense more effective, is by having your players perform daily shooting drills. By utilizing multi-player shooting drills, you can also improve your team's passing, ball handling, communication and catching skills.

Coach Weber covers several effective 3-on-0 shooting drills that help teach and reinforce the Match-Up Zone Offense concepts. A great way to practice against any zone defense is to create disadvantage drills, and here, viewers are shown excellent 3-on-4 and 4-on-5 Disadvantage Drills to help players not only find the best scoring option, but also how to push the ball and run against a zone in transition.

Weber finishes this highly informative on-the-court session by showcasing 5 effective set plays, including a side out of bounds play that works against either man or zone defenses. These plays produce open shots at the rim, post-up opportunities and good-look 3-point shots, perfect for any scenario you might face against a Match-Up Zone Defense, and each play flows smoothly into the offense.

This is a must-watch instructional, on-the-court video presentation for any coach who faces a tough-to-beat Match-Up Zone Defense.
