with Jeremy Bialek,
Houghton College Head Men's Basketball Coach;
2019 NCHBC National Champion; 2x Midwest Regional Champions (2009, 2019);
former Indianapolis Homeschool Wildcats Head Boys Coach;
6x ICBA State Champions (2011, 2015-2019); over 440 career wins; 7x Conference Champions

Playing a fast-paced, pressure defense can be fun and exciting for your entire team. In this video, 2019 NCHBC National Champion and 6x IBCA State Championship (Indiana) coach Jeremy Bialek, explains why the run and jump defense has made his program so successful.

Running the run and jump defense creates an environment in which you can dictate the pace of the game and utilize a deeper bench if you have one. Bialek demonstrates how versatile you can make the run and jump by combining it with any half court defense.

Whiteboard Diagrams & Philosophy

If you're a coach that has to visualize rotations and setups, Bialek's detailed whiteboard session where he explains the roles, goals, rules, types, and attacks of this defense is immensely helpful. By disrupting your opponent's rhythm and style of play, you'll create an advantage before the game even starts. Your opponents will be forced to spend time preparing to beat your full court defense rather than focusing on how to run their own system. Since the run and jump is unpredictable, you can even make adjustments in-game, forcing your opponent to do the same.

On Court Set-Up

Guiding you through on-court demonstrations, Coach Bialek lays out the foundation and reads your players will need to look for in order to be successful.

Starting with an aggressive press, athletes pick up the ball as soon as it is inbounded, applying pressure and preventing direct passes or drives up the floor. Guards must have the ability to force opposing players toward the sideline or toward the middle. It's essential that your athletes learn the priorities when playing within the run and jump defense: disrupt, deflect, and defend (the rim and arc) while not overcommitting (driving out of the play), which allows opponents to create advantages the other way.

If an aggressive style of play isn't a good fit for your program, you can take the run and jump defense and play an alternate "contain" style of full court defense. In this method, players sit back in gaps and force ball handlers to use up as much time as possible, which forces more passes, may lead to an opponent making forced decisions, and could wear opponents down during the course of a game.

Drills

With any full court pressure defense, players must be able to defend in transition and play a man down once the press is beat. Coach Bialek demonstrates how to prepare players to be ready for any disadvantage situation.

Starting with simple 1-on-1 full court drills, Bialek shows how to get ahead and cut off the ball handler as they change their pace and speed in the open court. In 1-on-3 Full Court, defenders learn to sprint from one ball handler to the next, stopping the offense from taking the ball straight to the rim and keeping the ball in front of them. Building to 4-on-4-on-4 Continuous, Bialek demonstrates how players need to set-up the press quickly and develop habits and reads as second nature.

This video provides the complete full court run and jump defensive package. If you're looking for a full court defense that will allow you to utilize your bench more and create disruption, deflections, and defend the arc, look no further!

The simple drills really work. Also liked the adjustments that were given on what to do against various press breakers. Thank you Coach!

I have over 30 plus videos and this is my least favorite, I think the whole video could have been done on a white board in 10 minutes. The only value I received out of it was different ways to attack a M2M run/Jump. Some of the drills were creative for any basketball team, not specific to R/J! Although coach may have a great understanding of the system, he never explained to the players and just let them roll them out and play. They never trapped from behind or even talked about it. He just talked about trap zones, and ways to start vs different alignments and told the players to just run around and trap. Very disappointed! Will be calling for a credit

This was a really good video. He starts out using a whiteboard to go over the rules of the press and the roles of the players. they then move to the court where you get to see players working on the press. What i really liked is that he went over different press breakers that are used against the run and jump and then you got to see the defense against the different press breakers. The video ends with several drills.

Unfortunately , this was the 2nd Run and Jump video I purchased. The first one didn't show me how to use it game situations. This was was great because he demonstrated every drill he was talking about with players that knew the Run and Jump. He praised the boys when they did it right and then showed what the players did wrong when they made a mistake.

I am glad I purchased this video and rate it 4,5 stars.

1. This tutorial gives insight into his R&J strategy. The structure of the video and strategy itself is well designed. The tutorial gives you drills that are not freely available on youtube. Bailek also addresses how to beat offensive countertactics which are often used against his R&J press i.e. clear out, 1-4 out of bounce, etcetc;
2. The difference between alot of free Run & Jump video's on youtube and Jemery Bailek's video, is that the Run & Jump Jemery Bailek runs also lets players trap & jump in the vertical plane. Eventually the players may trap anywhere for that matter iirc. This in contrast to freely available content of Rick Chambers, Steve Collins, George Mason and Mike Rhoades. Their R&J concepts are simpler and only trap in the horizontal plane stricktly against the sidelines;
3. The problem I have with these freely available Run & Jump clinics on the internet, is that some of these coaches do not let their teams play Run & Jump or never won alot of championships by playing a Run & Jump trapping defense. Next to that alot of freely available content has large holes in them, which often raises more questions then the video answers. So you basically still do not know the exact progressions and the way the trainers analyse the performance of players in drills they run. This raises the question how much their freely youtube clinics and freely avalable PDF"s are actually worth. I wanted to be sure that a Run & Jump trapping press could be competatively played by non-professional teams under U18 level. The video of Bailek gave me the last confidenceboost I needed to let a team play Run & Jump;
4. The reason I did not give 5 stars is because I would have liked 2 or 3 more drillsvideo's of how Bailek teaches the basic Run & Jump. Which according to this video is the basis of his Run & Jump Strategy (which is logical). You can find a number of these drills for free on the internet, but I would have rather liked to have his drills and progressions because his school became back to back to back champion by playing this Run & Jump trapping press. So Bailek must be doing something slightly different at every level which makes his Run & Jump strategy much more efficient;

I am glad I purchased this video and think coach bailek is a very good teacher.

I thought this video was one of the top pressing videos out there. A lot of good stuff to take from it, if you are wanting to be a pressing team. Was willing to answer any questions I had, and they were genuine answers.

The Run & Jump Press video thoroughly explained how to create controlled pressure, havoc, and unpredictability for opponents. Jeremy provided great detail and situational thinking that always answered the "what-if" or "well then what about". I really like full court defense because players, while it may take them awhile to learn the reads and communicate, are given the opportunity to play freely (within the rules and roles) and make anticipatory decisions. Great Video!

I have bought a lot of videos of this site and I found this one to be one of the best purchases I have made. The material was organized and explained in a logical, easy to follow manner!! In addition Coach Bialek went through common ways that the press may be attacked and provided counters for those attacks. I would recommend both Coach Bialek's videos!!
