Smart Basketball Training: Shooting

Catch and Shoot

Before anything else, you must learn how to shoot well off the catch. McBeth gives you drills that you can do by yourself or with a partner to help you learn to catch the ball and get a shot off quickly, which will make it harder for defenders to contest your shot. Additionally, you'll learn to pump fake, relocate, and jab step to keep the defense honest. Once you've perfected your catch and release, you'll learn goal-oriented exercises that will challenge you to make a specific number of shots in order to complete the drill.

On the Move/Off the Dribble

When you begin to feel more comfortable shooting spot-up jumpers, you'll want to add another dimension to your game - shooting on the move and off the dribble. Having the ability to shoot off of screens or create your own shot will give the defense fits as they try to guard you.

You'll learn drills that simulate catching and shooting on the run and others like the Diamond Chair Drill that force you to go through a brief ball handling routine before transitioning into a shot. There's also a variety of drills in this section that serve the secondary purpose of building your endurance so you can play at a higher level without getting tired.

Combination

Once you've mastered catching and shooting, shooting on the move and shooting off the dribble, it's time to put all of them together.
