Modified Pack Line Defense: No Middle, Dead Front, Force Corners & Traps

Pack line defenses have become increasingly more popular over the years. Unfortunately, this popularity comes with a drawback. With offenses getting more familiar with this type of defense and finding solutions to attack it, the challenge remains for coaches to add new elements to this type of defense. In this video, Tyler Whitcomb explains his modifications for the pack line, turning it into a "no-middle pressure" defense.

Philosophies and Foundations

Coach Whitcomb explains the rotations and the concepts of applying pressure on the ball, trapping the ball in the corners, and doubling the post player from the top. After explaining the basics, he starts building the defense using a series of four different breakdown drills. These drills gradually build-up towards the 5-player rotations of the defense, beginning with 1-on-1 and expanding on defending the standard offensive options using variations. All drills are executed with live offense, making the drills much more game-like.

In his 3-on-3 drill series, Coach Whitcomb focuses on defending the three most-used actions from any offense. Using this setting, the defensive steps for guarding the pass & screen away, guarding the pass & cut, and guarding the pick & roll are explained. During these drills, multiple teaching points regarding close-outs, steering the ball to the corner, switching on screens, and defending the cutter are emphasized. The last variation of the drill incorporates all previous actions into one drill: Cut-throat 3-on-3.

As a bonus, Whitcomb discusses the 4-1 zone defense, which has an alignment that will most certainly mystify opposing offenses.
