Justin Hutson has significant experience in developing nationally elite defenses with his time as an assistant coach at San Diego State and now as the head coach for the Fresno State Bulldogs. Coach Hutson believes great defenses have a foundation built on solid principles, but maintain a flexibility to adjust based on scouting your opponents. In this video, you will learn how to lock offenses down with drills that teach your team to defend dribble penetration, deny the post, guard ball screens, and stop elite shooters. Additionally, you will see how to extend your defense with a full court style of play.

Preventing Dribble Penetration

It is paramount to protect the paint in modern defenses with the increased use of ball screens and dribble penetration by opposing offenses. Hutson uses the shell drill to demonstrate his team's principles for shutting down drives. You will learn two variations to the shell drill that teach how to defend in the gaps to discourage penetration through early positioning and incredible stunting technique. Hutson's defense has a belief that "only suckers drive baseline". These drills also demonstrate how to make the opponent look silly on baseline drives with sharp rotations and traps on the dribbler. Coach Hutson discusses how to take away drift passes, sitting on the low post, and X-outs to quickly cover shooters.

Defending Popular Actions

Great defensive teams can adjust their tactics for the common actions teams run and talents of the players in your league. You will learn an excellent drill for training your defenders to guard an elite shooter. Hutson breaks down how to stay attached to shooters while fighting through flare screens and pin screens. A special emphasis is placed on how help defenders can assist on these actions to prevent the shooter from finding any opportunities.

You will also see how to force side ball screens toward the baseline in another breakdown drill that provides your team with multiple pick & rolls to defend in the same possession. Coach Hutson also details how to defend the post in various match-up situations. His teams will vary their tactics from all-out denial with a full front to playing behind with great shot blockers. Another practice drill teaches your off-ball defenders to shrink the floor, deny cuts, and dig at the ball when the ball is in the low post.

Full-Court Defense

Defenses must excel in transition defense before they can ever hope to optimally execute their half-court principles. Coach Hutson explains his offensive rebounding and "get back" responsibilities on missed baskets. You will learn a unique approach to transition defense that allows your team to maintain their match-ups. You'll also see how pressure can be extended on made baskets with the 55 defense. This strategy will double the point guard before the basketball is inbounded to really disrupt the tempo of the opponent. Hutson discusses how to vary the level of ball pressure and change the location and timing of your traps to constantly keep the opposing team on edge over the length of the game.

This video will give you insights from a high-level defense that you can use with your team!
