Being able to use a ball screen and attack the paint makes a team a dynamic offensive threat.  Using the double ball screen offense opens the door to many more scoring opportunities.  In this video, former NBA Scout Tyler Whitcomb lays out the double ball screen offense and actions you can use within the double ball screen motion offense.

Setup

Basic structure and setup of the double ball screen offense will help your players understand the in’s and out’s of this offense.  With your post players starting out at the lane line extended, you will open up the paint, allowing guards to attack the basket and draw 2 defenders.  Having 2 shooters in corners will force opponents to choose between helping on the drive and post players rolling or staying with the shooters in the corner.

Build Up

To help your players learn the actions, Coach Whitcomb breaks down the offense into 3v0 and 3v3 setting.  This will help your players learn post reads and whether or not to slip early, who pops, who rolls, or who can re-screen to help create more quick action towards the paint.  Once your post players and guards have mastered these actions, you can put a defense up against them so players learn to read and play out the offense when things break down.  All of this will help your players build up to 5v0 action where you can see how Coach Whitcomb teaches his players the basic continuity offense before going live in 5v5.

Special Actions

With many scoring actions that your players can use, this offense is tough to scout.  Using the basic offense your post players already have pick and pop, high-low, and Euroscreen actions.  Guards have a deep corner option and a pressure release that will get you into the offense early when your opponents put pressure at half court.   Whether you are an old school coach who likes flex action or a new school coach who likes to use horns setup, Coach Whitcomb outlines how you can incorporate both into the double ball screen offense and create easy scoring opportunities for your players.

Coach Whitcomb has seen first hand how this offense has helped various teams score at a high frequency and increase their points per possession rate.  In this video, he demonstrates all the scoring options you can use to get great looks around the basket or get a wide open 3.  This is an excellent offense if you are looking to add a set play or looking to get your players attacking the basket each trip down the floor.  You need to add this video to your collection for more offensive firepower in the seasons ahead!

Thought Coach did a great job teaching the initial offense and plenty of options off of it. Certainly, more pro-style but I think it will be a good offense for high school as it will be difficult for a defense to continuously defend. Like every good man to man offense, if you have success with it, you better make sure you have a good zone offense as well. Be interesting to see how well this offense could operate against a good zone defense. Time to get in the gym and experiment.
