In the era of passive packline defense, Brad Underwood charges in a different direction to get different results. Using his on the line-up the line half court pressure defense Coach Underwood's teams have been national leaders in steals and turnovers forced per possession over the last two years (2014-15).

Coach Underwood teaches you the principles and technique for positioning, maintaining denial through various offensive actions, and keeping pressure on the opponent while defending ball screens. Even less athletic players can excel in this defense by forming habits that encourage proper technique and the toughness to play with great effort every day.

Basics of On-Ball Defense

The goal of this pressure defensive system is to prevent your opponents from getting into the offense they want to run and force them to make catches further away from the basket. Coach Underwood begins his systematic approach to shrinking the court by describing the rules and responsibilities for each individual defender, and then explains how the defense moves as a unit as the ball is passed around. He details the pick up point and technique for ball pressure so your opponent is uncomfortable through the entire possession, and shows how off-ball defenders play "on the line and up the line" to deny passes.

Pressure vs Common Offensive Actions

Offensive players will very rarely just stand in place. Coach Underwood shows you how they maintain their pressure through the variety of actions your opponents will try to use against you. See how he trains his players to move and adjust their denial positions every time the ball moves Many of the concepts are broken down into a 2-on-2, 3-on-3, or 4-on-4 drill that you can use to focus on the action.

You will learn the technique for denying back cuts and basket cuts, playing post defense, stopping dribble penetration with a "plug" and sprinting to the mid-line to play help defense. Coach Underwood demonstrates how you can jump the gaps and disrupt screening actions such as screen aways, down screens, and baseline screens by playing up the line.

In order to tie his defense all together, Coach Underwood introduces the shell drill where he emphasizes communication, jumping to the ball, and sprinting to help. Players are encouraged to "do their work early" and have constant movement. Next, players work on handling the "down screen" where they jump to the ball and go third person. And they work on combination actions which makes it very game-like.

Defending Ball Screens

Opponents will try to use ball screens to scale down your pressure. Coach Underwood details strategies for attacking multiple types of ball screens to maintain their disruptive intensity. Learn how to trap the dribbler in the corner by "downing" or keep the offense on the sideline with a hard hedge by forcing players to their weak hand on side ball screens. You can adjust your rotations with "X-Action" to quickly cover screeners popping into space for an open shot. Coach Underwood also explains how to defend three different high ball screen actions by forcing dribblers to their weak hand and hedging.

The red, white and blue communication to defend on-ball screens is a brilliant tool that can be adapted into any defensive arsenal.

This comprehensive video is the "total package" for teams who want to utilize ball pressure and technique to get their players playing with maximum effort and energy.

"Love this title! This is the complete opposite of the Pack Line Defense. It seems like everyone is on the Pack Line bandwagon because of Virginia's success. However, there are a lot of high school teams out there who are clearly more athletic and longer. This high pressure half court man-to-man defense is perfect for teams who have the edge regularly in the athleticism department." - Customer Review

Great DVD, drills are well concepts and teaching are perfect. I would have really loved to have seen some live footage of them playing defense. Want to really see how their help side and stopping dribble penetration really works in a game situation.

Good video for learning their techniques, coach does an excellent job at describing what they do in every situation. Would've liked to see more breakdown drills and info on stopping drives, but overall good buy.

Another great instructional video! The only thing I'd have liked to have seen is live play/game speed to see the help side details. This is one difference I noticed from how most people play pressure m2m. Great detail and great teaching! Coach Underwood makes it really simple and I especially like the echo method in which they communicate. Looking forward to adding that to our Defense!

There were a few details he didn't show like a baseline beat, who rotates over? He answered someone on Twitter that he uses the post to step over, but he did leave some situations out of the video.

I highly recommend!

Really enjoy how Coach Underwood teaches the different aspects of the defense. Some say you have to have better athletes to do this, I think you just have to play hard all the time! This is a different style and may mesh well with a typical half court defensive team as a pressure package as opposed to having to use a full court press. I'd love to do this the entire game!

Outstanding video! Demonstrated by the same players that played so well in this seasons NCAA tournament. Coach Underwood covers all the basic situations necessary to implement the defense. Some concepts are unconventional like plugging the dribble gaps with your butt turned part-way toward the ball. However, the system is consistent and takes advantage of today's weakest fundamental, passing. I look forward to introducing on-the-line, up-the-line at the high school varsity level next season.

Terrific DVD by one of the very best coaches in college basketball! I have not seen a college basketball team the last few years put the kind of constant pressure in their half court man to man than Coach Underwood's SFA teams. Watch SFA play, they play defense exactly as Coach Underwood teaches on the DVD. Similar to the Bob Huggins/Frank Martin style of man to man, but Underwood's teams play the defense even more aggressively. Best of all, the video is shot with his own players, as opposed to a clinic setting. Coach Underwood explains that you can run this style of defense even with average athletes by using proper technique and aggressiveness. I feel the pack line era that has been the norm the last 10+ years has reached it's peak. I look for a shift back to more pressure oriented styles over the next few years. Especially at the high school level, where most states play without a shot clock. In addition, this defense gives teams that may be lacking a bit offensively to generate points off their defense. Coach Underwood is to the point, and continually emphasizes his key principles of the defense. We began implementing this defense with our Jr. high team towards the latter part of the season, and had good results with it. I can't wait to continue to refine the defense this summer and next year. If you are a coach that likes to dictate to opponents, force them out bog their offense, and create turnovers, get this DVD!
