In basketball today, the team that gets the most uncontested lay-ups and shots usually wins the game. Lindsay Gottlieb has embraced this thinking, and for this reason she has built one of the top up-tempo programs in the women's game. Her teams value and emphasize the fast break every single day. Coach Gottlieb's exciting and entertaining philosophy centers around consistently beating her opponents down the floor, thus producing easy baskets.

Coach Gottlieb understands that teams don't just naturally play fast - it comes from building a transition offense. In this presentation, she delivers her unique whole-part-whole approach to building and drilling her transition offense. You'll see how to set up the Blitz offense and how to effectively teach your players their individual roles within it. Starting off with three players and gradually working her way up to five, Coach Gottlieb builds each drill to train players in the motions of the transition set.

Blitz Secondary Break

Coach Gottlieb introduces her Blitz transition break and all of its options. She illustrates and explains the multiple options available in the break including the post, wing, and swing options. Her concept of having the point guard "dribble until they stop you" and the first post down "running down main street" are easily understood by players and provide a fast tempo or "flow" into her motion.

Breakdown Drills for the Blitz Secondary Break

After installing the secondary break as a whole, Coach Gottlieb uses on-court demonstrations to introduce multiple breakdown drills for the offense. The 3-on-0 Transition Drill provides the perfect format to train guards and a post to run, and thus develop, the "strong side" of her break.

Coach Gottlieb has the wings chopping in as she progresses to 4-on-0 Blitz by adding a trail post. With the 5-on-0 Blitz, she adds the opposite wing to amp up the Blitz options while conditioning her team at the same time.

Skill Development Drills for the Blitz Secondary Break

Using on-court demonstrations, you'll see 20 drills for both post and wing players that are simple and related to the transition offense. The drills will allow your players to feel more comfortable about making the right reads and being aware of what options they might have. Wing drills work on catch and shoot, layups, pull ups, wing attacks, baseline drifts and combo actions.

Coach Gottlieb demonstrates her post shooting series, designed to drill the rim runner and develop his/her ability to finish at the basket. This drill encompasses post sprinting, sealing, and finishing. After a second trail post is added, the drill includes high-low options, trail sweeps and wing screens and various scoring from the pin and seal duck-ins. Coach Gottlieb allows the post players to play in tandem, giving them more offensive freedom with post to post screening action, sweep and go action, and catch and shoot combo moves to the basket.

The Blitz system is broken down even further by combining wing and post players. In these "combo drills," players can practice dribble hand-offs and pin downs as they work together to make reads.

Coach Gottlieb not only demonstrates a tremendous early offense, she gives you the necessary drills and skill work to put more weapons in each of your players' arsenals and help them to be hybrid-type scorers as opposed to the standard, stereotyped position player.
