Basketball skills and fundamentals are the little things that make the biggest difference! No matter what offense you run, players need to be able to dribble, pass, and shoot. The more proficient they are at those skills and the better they get at understanding how to play the game, the better your program will be!

In this video, Coach Brad Brownell will deliver the drills he uses to teach and improve players skills to better prepare them for success. In this video you will get:

  • Dribbling and pivoting drills
  • Passing drills
  • Penetration reads drills
  • Way to create bigger driving lanes and more!

If you are ready to improve your players fundamentals and see an increase in the win column, this is the video for you!

Pivot Drills

Coach Brownell discusses the importance of working on the fundamentals every day and how it must be the foundation of everything you do. He shares several drills that work on dribbling, pivoting, and passing. The 4-Spot Spin Out is a great drill to get players warmed up. Players begin by dribbling around the arc and working on pivoting with the correct foot and protecting the ball. Two variations of the 2-on-0 Dribble Pass Back are shown where players build on the pivots and passes from the 4-Spot Spin Out drill. This time, with a partner, they practice passing away from the defense and learning how to cut after a pass.

Passing Drills

One of the least practiced fundamentals may be passing. Coach Brownell talks about the importance of making your passing drills game-like to keep it competitive and engaging. The 4-on-4 Passing drill can be used in various spaces in the half court. Players work on pivoting, passing around defenders, being strong with the ball and so much more! Press break principles are also shown within the drill as you begin to expand the space players can operate within.

Dribble Penetration Drills

Players must learn how to react to the ball once it is put on the floor regardless of what offense you decide to run. The dribble penetration drills shown by Coach Brownell are excellent and will get your players to start reading the floor and understanding how to play the game better. Incorporated into the drills are shots for the ball handler and perimeter players once the slides and reads have been made. Coach Brownell builds up from 2 player reads all the way to 4 and 5 player reads to dribble penetration.

Once a play is run that does not result in a score, what do you do? What do you teach? Coach Brownell challenges coaches to have a plan for the play after the play. To keep things moving and keep players attacking, he shows three different triggers that can easily be called and run by players on the court. These triggers will open up opportunities for players to drive into space and also incorporate simple actions from the Princeton Offense.

Finally, Coach Brownell shares a fun, competitive exercise that works on all of the skills and fundamentals shown. It also gives you an opportunity to run and practice transition offense and defense. The 100 Point Game will teach players to play fast and help them practice making decisions at full speed. It will also help players understand the importance of taking care of the ball as each turnover will result in losing 10 points. This is a great drill that will get your players conditioned while practicing the fundamentals of the game!

This video will give you fresh ideas as you plan your next season or practice and will help you keep a focus on the fundamentals!

This is one of my favorite videos. I'm a fan of Brownell after watching his Gap Attack Zone Offense video. He doesn't get up and rehash old coaching stories. He simply gives you stuff that he actually uses with his Clemson team. And he shares alot. This was the one video I really wanted to purchase and it was excellent. For background, I coach 9th grade girls BB so these fundamental drills are exactly what I need. The 4-spot spinout and the penetrate and pitch portions were probably my favorite. He talks about this in his 2024 shooting video too- a few years ago in November he was frustrated with how bad his team was. So, they started to do a ton of simple passing drills and did that for the rest of the year and it changed his coaching approach. I thought this was helpful. Later, he talks about being organized for the play after the play. And the Princeton stuff was solid. I've been fascinated with Princeton stuff lately and he shows how they use a little bit of Princeton without doing the whole thing. I really like Brownell. He shares alot! I would love Championship Productions to do an Open Practice with him. This video is my favorite of his three available and all three have been worth the money! (4-on-4 passing is a good portion to help your teams deal with trapping and pressure). Enjoy!
