Matt Painter, one of America's most successful, respected coaches, showcases four Purdue basketball practices demonstrating the drills, principles and techniques that have taken the Boilermakers to the top of the NCAA rankings, to 3 regular season Big Ten titles and on to the Sweet Sixteen (4x) and the Elite Eight in 2019.

Coach Painter emphasizes four basic parts of the game and structures his practice around them.

  • Half-court defense
  • Rebounding
  • Taking care of the ball
  • Transition defense

Painter sets the tone of each practice by starting out with his defensive breakdowns. He dissects Purdue's man-to-man defense with a variety of drills and exercises.

Painter's practices include post and perimeter skill work, transition motion, secondary break, free throw work, man defense, shell work, motion offense and much more.

Painter ends each practice with a competitive drill including a rebounding drill (Rebound War), a shoot out (No Man's Land) and a limitation drill (60 Point Drill).

Get your team into championship form with breakdowns, one-on-one teaching and competitive drills.

I think this is a really good All-Access DVD. Coach does a bunch of really good drills. Some of the drills are the usual drills that most coaches already do. But Coach Painter adds his own twist to them to make them competitive and meaningful. I love his pre-practice meetings which give a glimpse as to how these coaches motivate major college players. You also get an up-close look at how he interacts with all players during practice and you get to hear his comments to everyone. If you are looking to learn his offensive system, this DVD isn't for you. You could probably pick up on his main concepts, but you won't be able to learn anything about his offensive system. It's pretty confusing.
Still a really good DVD.

One of the best all-access sets I own. I think this, the Chris Mack set and the Frank Martin set are the best all-access DVDs by far.

Coach Painter is a supreme motivator and a tremendous teacher. He starts each practice with a dry erase board full of the days points of emphasis. After talking with his guys about how they are going handle their business, players are either ready to run through a wall to compete or looking for their mommy to write them a note to be excused from practice. Dude flat out lays in on the line.

Each drill tremendous. He makes guys earn everything and coaches his tail off. The set is packed full of defensive drills (closeouts, shell drills, ball screen drills, box out drills) to get your guys tougher on the defensive end. Also pack with tons of shooting drills, layups drills, ball handling drills, passing drills, etc. It's a 5 start home run!

Outstanding motivator and teacher. Allowd his assistants to coach but does not let things slide. Several good full and half court drills. Runs pure motion vs zone and man. Very informative and a well done DVD. Highly recommend!

There are many things that I liked about this set. It was interesting to see how he started each practice with his points of emphasis and how he broke down his practices. There are some really good drills that I like to. I would have liked to have seen a little bit more break down on his offense. Overall this was a pretty good DVD.

There are four practices, one on each DVD. Coach Painter starts each practice with his points of emphasis for the day and that better helps you follow the practice.
You get a good idea of Purdue's defensive philosophy and find valuable ideas in the drills that coach Painter uses. His drills are very well built and they create a natural progression that helps you understand the defensive goals Painter wants to reach.
The same is true for the motion offense they play. The post and perimeter drills are linked to what they work on later in practice in 4on4 and 5on5 scenarios.
A good, solid DVD set worth of 4 stars for me.
