Aggressive 1-3-1 Zone Defense

Very good 1-3-1 video. Very detailed covers basic jobs with several variations . Extra bonus of 3 nice set plays. Very well done. I rated it a 4 only because I would have loved to see some breakdown drills to teach it.

Not much aggressive about another trapping 1-3-1. Bought the video expecting something other than traditional 1-3-1, disappointed. No breakdown drills to speak of to teach 1-3-1. Drills and bonus material were average at best. Not worth the $39.99 that I spent. Should have bought Beilein's video.

I think this is a great video for learning how to install the 1-3-1 Zone Defense. Tom Blackford does a great job of breaking down the roles of each of the players in the Zone. He also gives you the physical characteristics you should look for in a player to put them in the spot that will allow them to be the most successful.

I especially appreciated his step by step breakdown of the movements from each spot. The video goes into detail about what each player should do according to what the offense does and how to counter their different angles of attack.

At the end of the video, he shows a couple of drills that I have found to be helpful to my team's skill work that was an added bounus.

This is a fantastic video explaining the 1-3-1 Zone Defense and is a must have in my opinion. Great attention to detail and effective on the court examples. Coach Blackford also leaves his contact information at the end, which I utilized and he was extremely helpful with my questions. Excited to use this defense this season, worth every penny.

I purchased this DVD years ago but recently revisited it. It is one of the best I have seen. I especially love it because it's from a high school coach who deals with high school athletes so you know it's something that can translate to you the youth or high school level. Coach Blackford does a great job breaking it down and putting it all together with the added bonus of some of the other drill work included. Coach Blackford was kind enough to spend time with me on the phone further answering questions, explaining philosophy, and breaking down key components of the defense as well as other areas of the game. You will not be disappointed with this one.

I hope to make my varsity girls team much more aggressive this year and will use this to model my main defense.

Great video on the 1-3-1. Also, good bonus offensive drills, we are using them at the middle school level and it is helping us already.

Tom Blackford's aggressive 1-3-1 video is one of the best and most thorough basketball videos I have come across in my 30+ years of coaching. I have implemented the defense and my players love it. I have run the 1-3-1 before but some of Tom's concepts are very unique to the defense. What I like best is that I had some questions and Tom answered them all thru phone calls. Tom takes his defense and the video very seriously and is more than willing to help you out if you need it.

Coach Blackford is an excellent teacher. He made the rules for the Aggressive 1-3-1 very easy to understand. We implemented his concepts and had a lot of success using the 1-3-1 last season. More than that, when I had questions, I was able to call coach and he was willing to answer any questions I had.

I highly recommend this tape. I especially like some of his drills that get a lot of shots/finishes which we used quite a bit.

I had questions about the video and called Coach Blackford for help. We setup a time to call later in the day and he answered every question that I had. Talk about customer service...Loved the video and could not be anymore pleased.

First and foremost, coach Blackford does a fantastic job of breaking down this attacking defense. He is three wins shy of 500 career wins so when he states that a triple team in this defense works, then he has years of proof to suggest it will. I researched a ton of videos and, for the life of me, could not justify buying a college program DVD. Why? Because I cant recruit players, I can only coach who is enrolled and Coach Blackford has spent his entire coaching career in high school. This is a HUGE deal to me and the purchase justified my reasoning.
Finally, Coach Blackford and I talked on the phone for over an hour. I could be wrong but I don't see a big time college coach taking an hour out of their schedule to talk to a middle school coach. He is detailed, organized and extremely helpful. If you are a high school coach and looking for a team identity then I strongly suggest your purchase this video.

After watching the video it this defense might work at the high school level. The offensive players in the video are non athletic and offensively not very skilled players (also in the game clips). Therefor the defense has a big advantage. Very doubtful is this will work at the college or even higher level (better athletes, better offensive players, better coaching) and also things like having 3 defenders on the ball is very questionable. Overal it was nice to see this video, but doubtful if this will work.

I wish Championship Productions had a six star rating option and I would give this dvd it. This dvd will be a great starting point for anyone that wants to learn the 1-3-1 zone defense. Breaks down the each spot. Coach Blackford gives you his own unique variations with the triangle and two. The game footage at the end of the video is another great visual to learn each rotation. Also, if you have any questions, you just call Coach Blackford. Coach Blackford will answer any questions about the dvd or about basketball in general.

Excellent film. Coach Blackford does a nice job of carefully explaining each player's responsibilities . The use of game footage really shows how successful this defense can be.

This is the best realistic breakdown of the 1-3-1 aggressive zone. Coach Blackford presents basic concepts that are a must when playing this defense. We immediately implemented a few changes based upon this DVD and saw immediate results with our Jr. High team. The bonus secondary offensive sets and shooting drills that he presents in this DVD are legit. No joke, You are getting a 3 for 1 value with this DVD. Coach Blackford's invitation to contact him with questions is no joke either. I emailed Tom and he responded immediately with a time to call him. He graciously spoke with me for nearly an hour regarding 1-3-1, program building and anything else that I wanted to ask him. Most valuable DVD I have purchased. Thanks Coach.. Tom Blackford does a great job with this video. There are several concepts that he uses that I have not seen in any other videos. If you are looking to get out and be aggressive on defense this is the DVD for you. To add to the DVD, I contacted Tom through email and he was gracious enough to call me and answered several questions I had about the defense. Great video and even better guy. I feel blessed to have him as a contact going forward. Thanks again Tom.

This DVD is worth every penny. It is extensive and thorough. Coach Blackford does a good job of describing every player's role and all of the intricacies of the defense. He includes all of the little things and fundamentals that a player needs to do in order to make the defense successful. He also includes a lot of other options such as how to adapt this defense to your personnel such as changing into a triangle in 2 or other things. I also really enjoyed the game footage highlights with him narrating to comment on what to specifically look for. He also includes a lot of extras such as offensive drills that complement the defense. One of the best DVDs out there. Even if you don't want to run 1-3-1, I would recommend it because there are a lot of good principles that could be applied elsewhere.

Thank you Coach Blakford for talking to me over the phone and answering my questions. This defense changed my team in the 2nd half of the season because players worked harder on defense and create easy points on offense. This defense can take you far and the game of basketball just becomes fun. Thanks Coach!

I am European coach with 28 years of expirince in pretty high level, and I can say that this dvd is fantastic and for sure unique ideas which we didtn see before...

One of the greatest detailed videos on the topic or on any topic. Covered a lot of the small stuff that get overlooked that are helping us put things in place the right way the first time we are teaching. Is a great resource and helpful with any questions. I am very excited about using this defense.

Coach Blackford shows a good example of implementing the 1-3-1. We put it in after reviewing and players are already picking up simple concepts.

I was excited to get this DVD when I read the reviews. But I was disappointed that it was nothing more than a regular 1-3-1 high school defense that a lot of teams use. I did get out of the video that the wing does want to take a banana cut from the bottom block back out to the top when the ball is reversed. But outside of that I expected a little more in depth views of how the 1-3-1 works and drills as to how to teach it.

One of the best I have ever viewed. I own over 100 dvds and this is in the top 5. Easy to follow and install. Does some unique twists to the 1-3-1 and gives great teaching points. I have numerous 1-3-1 dvds but this is the best. You also get some excellent shooting drills and offensive sets. Most impressive was the fact I emailed coach with some questions and he had me call him, we talked for over an hour and a half. Most impressed I have been with a dvd in years.

Coach Blackford's DVD is one of the top 3 in my library. He adds multiple wrinkles to the 1-3-1 that we will use immediately. Better than the instruction on the DVD is his willingness to help out fellow coaches. After watching the DVD I emailed Coach about his defense. He responded quickly and invited me to call him the same night. We talked for around 45 minutes and I picked up a ton of information, tips, and advice. Great job, Coach Blackford.

Anyone wanting to run the 1-3-1 needs to buy the video ASAP

Excellent DVD! Coach Blackford gives you everything you need to successfully implement this defense. The variations he discussed are unique and would give opposing teams nightmares. He was even kind enough to answer additional questions. The drills and set plays at the end are an added bonus. This DVD is well worth the money!

Dismissed by some. Feared by many. Understood by few. The 1-3-1 is that defense that many coaches will dissect on a whiteboard but know that when game time comes even the best teams can send the ball sailing in to the bleachers or jack uncharacteristically bad shots against it. I've seen a lot of 1-3-1 videos and this is the best I've watched. His adjustments would be a nightmare to prepare for, especially on a short turnaround. Coach spent time personally answering questions on the defense. He's been at this a long time and has seen most anything any of us will see. Great job coach. Really enjoyed it!

I have many defensive videos and this is the best. Coach Blackford breaks down his defense in great detail and adds game footage to hit the point home. This defense is NOT your standard 1-3-1. It is a pressure defense that calls for constant pressure via traps. The last segment of the video gives some offensive development drills and secondary sets. This is a great video, and one well worth the money.

Excellent DVD. Coach Blackford gives you a blueprint for the 1-3-1 with very interesting wrinkles. The idea of morphing the 1-3-1 into a triangle and two is different I'm excited to put that into play this season. He gives you great breakdowns and has some live game footage at the end of the DVD of his own team playing this style. He also includes his email to ask further questions. Not only did he reply to my email, we were able to speak on the phone to further discuss the 1-3-1. If you are in the market for a 1-3-1 DVD, you will not find a better one. A+++++++

Excellent video with great content! If your interested in running the 1-3-1 this is a complete video. The wrinkles and multiple defensive looks that Coach Blackford provides and great and easy to install. I even had a few questions about this defense and I called Coach Blackford and we spent over an hour on the phone talking. Great overall video and I appreciate Coach Blackford spending time on the phone to talk about this defense.

This is a really well put together presentation on the 1-3-1 defense. Coach Blackford covers a lot of different scenarios in his presentation, and anything not covered he gracious enough to trade emails with you or even speak by phone! He also talks in depth as to why his defensive concepts are different than a more traditional zone thus causing a lot of confusion for opponents.

One of the best DVD's I have seen recently on the 1-3-1 Defense. While the details state there are breakdown drills, he just breaks down and describes each position which is basic. However, I learned several things including some new roles of the middle (5) man, and very interested in the wrinkles of a ^and 2 and diamond defenses out of this set.
He also throws in a couple of good shooting drills, along with some quick hitters for man offense which are good, along with actual game footage of this defense at work. Overall, def worth the money.

Our Etobicoke High School Varsity Basketball Team here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, recently clinched home court advantage this January, 2016, throughout our upcoming playoffs and ran our season record to 16-5 with a hard-fought win on our home court that has been typical of our scores all season long. Down by 3 at the end of the 1st…down by 1 at the half…up 42-40 going to the 4th…and then we outscored our opponent 17-7 to win it 59-47. Why? Because of our tough 1-3-1 aggressive zone defense which we have used exclusively all season long led by our phenomenal chaser and our team rebounding. We are also one of the best three-point shooting teams in our league and this, too, comes from Tom and his DVD which includes his outstanding thirty minutes of shooting drills that we use each and every practice to make us better. Personally, this has been the perfect year for me to implement all that is on Tom Blackford's DVD with the outstanding talent I have this season. I have coached for 25 seasons and this is the first season I have seen and used Tom's DVD. It is amazing and I am so grateful and so are my players to play at this high level as they have this season. We would not have had this kind of season so far without both the DVD and our phone calls, too, which Tom also invites his audience to do on his DVD. That has formed a great friendship for me as well as helping me to organize our practices. Thank you, Tom!

Coach Blackford's 1-3-1 is like a juiced up 1/2 court trap. Constant pressure, it is like a team that loves to press for the whole game but does it in a 1/2 court setting. Different than Klaas's
1-3-1 defense. So well titled "Aggressive" His adjustments are very good, I haven't seen them anywhere else, but the best part is I called Coach Blackford with questions and he was very helpful and kind to answer all my questions.

This was by far one of the best videos I have purchased. It is a must get for any coach wishing to learn more about the 1-3-1 zone defense. In addition, the coaching insight, plays, and drills that are included put this video over the top. Coach Blackford does a great job of explaining everything in a precise and detailed way. I hope Coach Blackford is asked to shoot more videos in the future. No one will be disappointed with this purchase.

Coach Blackford does an excellent job presenting various adjustments and tweaks that can be added to your 1-3-1 pressure defense. He was also very generous in talking with me by phone to further explain some nuances that I was interested in. He went on to share his coaching philosophy as well as coaching experience with me. This was priceless coming from a Hall of Famer.

Coach Blackford's 1-3-1 dvd is one of the best I have seen on any topic, and I have well over a hundred dvd's in my library. He does a great job of explaining players roles in the defense and how to react to certain situations. He adds a couple good shooting drills and set plays at the end that put this dvd over the top. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to implement an aggressive zone defense.

This is a great video for the HS coach. Coach Blackford teaches a very aggressive 1-3-1. I really liked the different stunts and twists he uses. He also throws in a couple of shooting drills and secondary breaks to end the video which are worthwhile. He includes about 8:00 minutes of game footage of his 1-3-1 live which is helpful as well. Even if your teams have run the 1-3-1 for years like mine have, I guarantee you will still find some good nuggets of information to take with you. This video goes in my top ten for sure and I hope Coach Blackford releases future videos. Five stars!

Todd does an outstanding job of explaining his defense. He hides absolutely nothing and has a true desire to help coaches. His thoughts and strategies used in the 1-3-1 are unique but proven! Excellent job by Coach Blackford. I also have Felton's, and I like it as well, but this is a more juiced version of the 1-3-1 with several variations on the back end to keep opponents on their toes. This is such a full "Zone System" unlike any I've seen before and he gives you plenty of options to counter with. There is so much info on this one Disc. I highly recommend this product. I run some 1-3-1 and I will be using several concepts from Tom Blackford.
