AAU Coaching Boys Basketball Series: Motion Offense

Fran Fraschilla gives you the basic elements of a motion and press offense that will allow you to pick and choose what you want to implement with your youth team.

Motion Offense:
If the break is not open, Coach Fraschilla gives your players an offense to run to maintain pressure on the defense throughout the possession. He breaks down a simple motion offense into drills, skills, and movements that are easy for your players to pick up and master using the skills they develop in practice.

He builds the offense 5-on-0 so you can easily see the player movements and then runs the motion 5-on-5. Fraschilla executes every motion offense with a post-on-guard screen in order to give you multiple scoring options right from the start. Show your players how to use message cuts to communicate to their teammates if they are open or if they should catch and look for another option.

Coach Fraschilla diagrams and demonstrates a second option for your motion offense using ball screens to attack a defense and create foul trouble for your opponent's key players. Fashioned after the European Ball Screen Offense this continuity system spreads the floor and allows your guys to play off the pick and roll. This is a simple, but very effective offense that merges well with the motion and secondary break. You do not need big post players to incorporate this offense, as it includes backdoor cuts and open drive lanes.

Press Offense:
No offensive system is complete without breaking a press. An organized attack against a full court defense can lead to scores if you maintain spacing and ball control. Coach Fraschilla demonstrates a simple press breaker that will work against a man or a zone defense and easily flow into your fast break options, secondary break offense, or your simple motion offense depending on what the defense is giving you.
