Basketball Conditioning Drills - 20-10-10

Description:

We use this drill for several purposes. Conditioning, transition, shooting lay ups, and full court fast break opportunities. The team must make 20 lay-ups in a row within the 10-minute time frame or we run 10 up and back sprints.

Instructions:

Divide team into 5 lines on the baseline. Players will five-man weave down the floor and back. When one group finishes, the next group of 5 head down and back. This continues for 10 minutes or 20 consecutive lay-ups, which ever comes first.

The coach or the manager keeps track of the number of consecutive lay-ups made.

Every time there is a missed lay-up, the count starts over.

If the team makes 20 lay-ups before the time expires, I usually give them some type of reward.

As the team progresses, I increase the number of consecutive lay-ups or cut the time allotted, or increase the number of sprints.

Number of Players:

5 or more, 10-15 players works best

Tips:

Challenge players to go as hard as they can. Initially they will take things pretty slow and cautious.

Be sure your players are communicating with each other. This can be a great team builder to help bring up the level of play of your lower skilled players. Everyone must do his or her part in order for success in this drill.

Variations:

Every time there is a poorly thrown pass, start the count over.

Every time the ball is fumbled or mishandled, start the count over.

Every time there is a violation, i.e. traveling, start the count over.
