Features & Benefits Develop consistency as a hitter by being short to the ball but long through the ball Learn how something as simple as the batting stance can set a hitter up for success - or failure Teach your hitters to shift their weight through the ball to increase power with Howard Dobson, LSU Assistant Coach;2016 USA Women's Softball National Team Assistant Coach;Assistant Coach for the 2014 USA Softball Elite Team; former Southern Mississippi Head CoachNot every hitter is the same, but to be successful, every hitter needs to master the basic fundamentals of hitting. USA Softball Elite Team assistant coach Howard Dobson explores every facet of the swing, showing some of most common flaws that hitters exhibit, while demonstrating his overall philosophies on hitting to develop the correct mechanics a hitter needs to be successful at the plate. The StanceAs elementary as it may seem, the batting stance has a significant impact on the swing, setting a hitter up for success or failure. Coach Dobson develops the swing from the ground up, because power and force come from the ground. He covers every detail of an effective set-up for the lower body - an athletic, balanced position with the body stacked. Bat PlacementBy starting with your body in the correct position, there are fewer moving parts that can break down. Dobson delivers an essential demonstration lecture on gripping the bat, bat placement, body posture, head angle, and more. Each technique relates back to minimizing bat movement to create a quicker, more effective swing. The StrideCoach Dobson takes on a somewhat contentious topic in softball, the linear weight shift. He begins by discussing the load and stride, and also explains when to load based on the pitcher you are facing. He also explains the correct technique for the stride, which part of the foot should land first, and purposes of the stride. A proper load is necessary for good weight transfer, and a well-timed stride will help enhance timing.ContactLearn why it's important to keep the hips behind the barrel and the hands close to the body. Good hip movement helps batters deliver strong contact on an outside pitch. Learn how to extend through the ball to stay in the zone and develop consistency in your swing.FinishingAt times, too much emphasis is placed on the finish of the swing. According to Coach Dobson, the finish of the swing should happen naturally. He also tackles questions like where to stand in the box and how to make adjustments to box position based on the pitcher. Each pitcher throws differently and will dictate a somewhat different approach. It is easy to see why Coach Dobson has produced some of the best hitters in the game. His passion and enthusiasm for the art of hitting are contagious!87 minutes. 2013. This item also belongs to the following series! Ratings & Reviews Building a Championship Hitter on March 31, 2018 Currently 5/5 Stars.5/5 Stars 5 by Anonymous Great introduction to the basics and mechanics of hitting, especially for those of us who had virtually no prior coaching in this and whose sole hitting experience was playing on backlots. Coach Dobson gives great explanations of rationale behind techniques, and a marvelous breakdown of gender-based differences and things to watch out for should you coach female players. Would definitely recommend. Wish he had more. Was this review helpful? Yes No Building a Championship Hitter on April 20, 2015 Currently 4/5 Stars.4/5 Stars 4 by CoachBroker Great DVD with a lot of good information. Like any skill, there is a lot of garbage being taught and put out for sale or online, this is one is the real deal. This DVD shows how to build a good foundation for your hitter and explains why he is teaching what he teaches. He also explains why not to do some of the things that other hitting coaches teach. I would have enjoyed some slow motion video of a hitter during their swing highlighting what you are trying to accomplish. Over all I feel this is a good tool that is worth having in your video library. Was this review helpful? Yes No Building a Championship Hitter on January 29, 2014 Currently 4/5 Stars.4/5 Stars 4 by WillFoote918 This is a solid tape that shares a sound hitting philosophy and the rationale behind some of his thinking on hitting. There are few nuggets here and this is as a good a place to start learning about the basics of hitting. It would have been nice to have had some slow motion video of swings and a bit more talk about faults and fixes. There is nothing about slapping or bunting which I think should be part of such a disc. Overall, a fine tape with some new insights but could have been improved using some of the common technology that is available. 2 of 2 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful? Yes No Building a Championship Hitter on December 25, 2013 Currently 4/5 Stars.4/5 Stars 4 by RocketMan13 A lot of solid info in this hitting video, adding somebody taking live cuts as coach breaks it down, would've been icing on the cake. He covers a bunch of areas though. 3 of 3 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful? Yes No Building a Championship Hitter on November 25, 2013 Currently 5/5 Stars.5/5 Stars 5 by ScottRaymond688 I enjoyed Coach Dobson's DVD. Like the other review said, he uses different terminology than perhaps you have heard elsewhere so it gives you another approach. Highly recommend his drills DVD too. I have the Tschida hitting videos which are outstanding, and I think the Dobson ones would be a great addition. 3 of 3 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful? Coach Dobson's fundamentals are similar to many other coaches, but he offers some unique teaching points that I had not heard elsewhere. 3 of 3 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful?
