In the 2013-14 season, first year Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood led his team to a 32-3 record. His team became the first in school history to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament and advance to the second round of the tournament as a 12 seed. The Jacks were one of only three schools in the nation to go undefeated in conference play in the 2013-14 season.

With offensive schemes changing every year, coaches are always looking for an edge. Stephen F. Austin State University Head Coach Brad Underwood shares his version of the basketball spread offense, a continuity-based scheme that creates a lot of movement to stress the defense.

This scheme is a "position-less offense," which gives the defense different looks based on the different entries that can be used. The spacing, passing, cutting and driving lanes available ensures that your team gets high percentage shots. Coach Underwood breaks down his spread offense in a whole-part-whole instructional set-up, including drills that provide great scoring opportunities .

Coach Underwood starts by showing where players are positioned on the court and how they will move once the first entry pass is made. No matter what entry is made, two offensive players make consecutive hard basket cuts. If they don't get a high percentage shot, they move into 2-man game. Coach Underwood breaks down all of the cuts made to execute these offensive concepts, which has continuity from either side of the court.

He then demonstrates three ways to flow into the offense if the initial wing entry is not open. Each action is based on the point guard's decision. The basic entry is the wing entry. Coach Underwood explains why it's important for players to fight to get their spot, and what they can do to get that spot. High post entry is used when facing teams that like to pressure the perimeter. Dribble entry provides another different look using a down screening action on the weak side to get a player a great post up opportunity. All of these entries are reads and not particularly calls from the bench.

Breakdown Drills
Coach Underwood breaks down daily practice drills to teach the skills and build the habits needed to run the offense effectively. Players learn to play each spot and while the entire team is involved, the drills are broken down into the 2-, 3- and 4-player actions of the offense. The drills focus on fast and aggressive cuts, which is the most important element to a successful offense. Coach Underwood also shares an in-depth look at next most important element, which is his two-man game. Lastly, he emphasizes the fill players, who are a vital part of the offense to keep the floors spaced and balance in order to stress the defense.

Coach Underwood also shows you how an element of the popular dribble drive motion offense can be used with his spread offense to create favorable match-ups and post player looks.

If you're looking to spread the floor with an offense that combines great cuts, post play and an effective two-man game, look no further. Coach Underwood shares a complete spread offense package that creates a continuity offense while incorporating the key elements of the new and upcoming styles of offense.

Not what I expected. Spread offense is more like flex then a free flowing offense. The offense is also not that spread. To many people in the paint.

Excellent DVD. Thorough explanations and examples. If you knew nothing about this offense going into the DVD, you'd leave with enough base knowledge and lead up drills that you could effectively teach this offense to most any varsity or JV level team.

Spread offense is the child -if we can call it so- from the chin series from Princeton offense and from the pinch post action from the Triangle offense. It is a positionless offense that is suitable to teams that don't exactly have great or many big centers in their arsenal. In this DVD Brad Underwood does a great job in presenting through a very organized manner the basic aspects of this offense plus the breakdown drills needed to install this offense.

GREAT VIDEO!!

Love Brad's Underwood's Philosophy On Basketball - Both Defensively and Offensively.

He is an excellent teacher of the Pinch Post and Spread. Another great video is the Dana Altman Spread Video as well.

Intrigued by the offense. Thinking about purchasing the video. What personnel would you guys recommend for running this offense? (I coach at a small HS)

Championship Productions replies:
I would recommend 1 Post player who can step out and shoot surrounded by four players who can shoot and drive to the basket. Please feel free to give me a call in the office or on my cell phone 515-460-8080. Thanks --- Thom McDonald, Championship Productions

This is one of the best videos I have purchased. Coach Underwood does a great job of teaching the Spread Offense. I'm in the process of implementing it now over the summer and the girls have picked up on it very fast and love it. High Recommended!!!!!

It is a good video; however, I never would have purchased it if it was categorized properly. This is not a 5 out motion. Even though I enjoyed the video, I feel as though I wasted money as it really wasn't what I was looking for.

Championship Productions replies:
The reason Coach Underwood calls it "spread" is because of what it does to the defense. It flattens the defense out, gives unbelievable floor spacing, it takes the defense away from the basket and in turn provides fantastic driving opportunities. It opens the floor for driving, cutting, and back door opportunities. This offense removes the defensive unit from the paint and hampers their ability to help and recover on drives.

Good luck this season! If there's anything you ever need, don't hesitate to give me a call in the office at 1-800-873-2730.

Great detail on an offense that is a variation of Princeton, with my dribbling and ball screening options. Well documented and detailed. Easy to follow and gives great verbiage and concepts that are easy to teach. Good to run a lot of various sets out of them as well! Worth the cost and your time!

Much like the previous comments, I am in agreement. This is a very solid video with great presentation. Some of the things that really caught my eye were; showing the whole offense and then breaking it down into parts (whole-part-whole), including ways to enter into the offense if an option is blocked. The other thing that I liked was the breakdown drills for the offense. Lastly, I really liked how coach gave instruction. To me this is always a huge plus for any DVD, solid instruction/coaching. When a player is not doing something right, coach (in this DVD) corrects the player on the spot. This is a 5-star DVD.

This is a very good video over the same continuity offense presented in Dana Altman's original DVD on the High Post offense. There are some minor differences in the techniques emphasized between the two coaches but a lot of the same stuff is covered. I would recommend this title because the quality of the presentation is much better. This title also includes breakdown drills and Altman's doesn't have any at all. However, Coach Altman discusses using the offense versus a 2-3 zone defense and also gives you a bunch of set plays for man and zone. Overall, if you were serious about running this offense, I'd definitely purchase both as each title has some exclusive features that will help you over the course of the season.

This production was well done. The offense is probably something I would use as part of a princeton set but I thought the overall presentation was good and explained well enough that if you decide you like the offense and want to install it, you will have no problem.

The name is misleading. I Would categorize this as more of a 4 out continuity than a spread offense.

Having said that, the DVD is really well done and Coach Underwood does a great job teaching the details of this offense. This is a very good set if you have the right personnel. I would certainly recommend this to anyone looking for some 4 out motion.

I really enjoyed this DVD. Great attention to detail and explanation of what to do and why they do it a certain way as it pertains to being affective vs a defense. Comes with breakdown drills as well as film of concepts covered in the DVD. Very well done.
