Very disappointed. These Open Practice DVDs are always hit and miss with me.
I just watched Harry Perretta's Open Practice DVD and it was great, mainly because Harry talks over the DVD to explain what he's doing and why he's doing it.
This DVD, Weber gives a 15 minute speech before each of the two main segments and then it's just raw footage of a summer workout with bad and sometimes shaky camera angles. There's zero voiceovers here or explanation on what they're trying to do with the drills.
This next part is my own fault because I didn't pay attention to the segment breakdown. The guard and post segments are broken down into two HOUR LONG sessions. So it's incredibly hard to find what you're looking for. So even if you find something you may want to use, you need to take note of the time stamp in order to find it again. I'm sorry but that's lazy editing.
The post segment I found more useful than the guard stuff. There were a couple of nice post ball screen drills that I liked. That's hardly worth $40 though.
I wanted to see some breakdown of their ball screen offense. don't get that stuff here. I understand this is summer stuff but there's no concept talk here at all. Just 'no defense' drill work.
You get to see the K-State guards running basic drills in a few different scenarios: flare screen, pin down screen, etc. If you're thinking of buying this DVD because you run a ball screen offense (like me) then don't expect to get a lot of teaching nuggets from this. It's just fast paced drilling and you're left to guess as to why they're doing what they're doing and what teaching points they are trying to emphasize. I have viewed other summer workout videos but at least you usually get teaching point overdubs.
I buy a lot of stuff from CP but this one I really regret purchasing. If you're looking for post player development, Lockwood's DVD is awesome and for guard drill work the PG workout DVD from the Wichita State coach is very good.
There's also a lot of great Ball Screen videos worth purchasing. This is not one of them.
If you are looking for ball screen videos, Wes Peek's stuff is great, Building a Ball Screen Offense w/ the Kent State coach, and Chris Mack's Ball Screen DVD is also excellent.
