Turn your team into a defensive powerhouse using the same concepts used by legendary high school coach Bob Hurley.
System PhilosophyHurley stresses the importance of never staying in the same system for too long and how to adapt to your players' strengths. He shares the three things that he works on every day to build his man-to-man defense.
Pick up the three essential rules that your team must follow in order to be successful against teams that like to push the ball in transition. Learn how to turn the table on a pattern team and make them play in an uncomfortable setting.
Building the PressHurley demonstrates four different styles of presses and traps that he utilizes to take the other team out of their comfort zone. He explains what he does in all late game situations, his philosophy behind it and why it has been so successful.
Gimmick Defenses Within his system, Hurley explains that in every game he uses an "element of surprise" for at least one possession. Hurley tells stories of how he prepares for the opposition's leading scorer and what he does to keep that player from scoring.

Like others mentioned, there are some nuggets in the DVD but Coach Hurley talks way too much throughout this DVD, and the others in the series for that matter. There is a lot left to the imagination, as there is too little information on how to actually implement the systems and see them demonstrated in action with corrective teaching on the fly. As a novice coach I didn't find these as helpful as perhaps a more experienced coach would.
I thought this was a great DVD. Shows a good drill to practice transitioning defenses. I thought his stories about why he uses certain strategies were excellent. Explained why he would use each defense very well. I guess my only complaint is that I wish there were more drills but overall it was excellent.
I liked this one if only because I completely agree with Coach Hurleys reasons for throwing a lot of stuff out there on defense, the philosophy of why its important is interesting and can get a coach thinking about their own system. Where it does fall a little short though is most of the defenses are glossed over, not a ton on how to install them. The positive is that there are a good 5 defenses talked about and a handful of others are mentioned. I liked how junk zones are practiced in the 4 on 4 on 4 drill, really great for offense and communication as well.
Not as good as any of the videos in the excellent series "Bob Hurley's favorite drills". Unfortunately the title of the DVD is misleading; it should be "How to use a multiple defensive system". I'd love to throw all sorts of brilliant defenses at other teams, just like any coach would. The reason I don't is because installing them and practicing them just flat-out takes too long. I got this DVD hoping for advice on how to teach it to kids. There is a very little bit of that, mostly due to the fact that Bob Hurley is a teacher and coach to the core of his being -- it's not due to the product being well-organized and produced.
Coach Hurley provides valuable insights in this DVD. If you are interested in changing up your defenses, he lays out a good rationale for everything he does. The best part of the video is his 4v4v4 drill that requires each defense to change their junk defense each time, while emphasizing that the offense quickly organize their press after scoring. I gave it 4 stars because Hurley does a lot of talking, and most of this information could have been provided for a lot less in a text format.
Pretty good video. Covers alot of different defensive strategies you could use in a game. Doesn't go into a lot of detail on them, but shows the basic set up and reasoning for using certain defenses.
Liked it...wish there was a 4.5 rating, but gets you thinking about switching defenses and pressing a little. Will watch video again either during summer or before season b/c he gets you focused on teaching presses the right way. His extended 1-3-1 might be useful to your team and be different.
Great video. Coach Hurley does a great job decribing and showing several different defenses and sharing his defensive philpsophy.
