Billy Donovan: Mastering the Full-Court Match-Up Press

As someone who has spent the last two seasons implementing a half-court matchup zone defense I found this to be an excellent next step in extending it to the full court.

There was plenty to chew on throughout the build up and it is pretty easy to see where you can make your own adjustments to fit your players and your scheme.

A very good demonstration of how to implement his full court press, which is basically trap anything dribbled into a gap and then rotate for steals. His drills and explanations were very useful but I would have liked more time on how he matches up after a made basket versus different formations. 5 stars

I own plenty of DVDs from this site, and this is by far the best single dvd. Coach does a great job of providing drills, explaining, and building up to the 5-5 press. It gives a great blueprint of the press, which allows you as coach to play with the press and add your own wrinkles, as I did. Great dvd

In response to you guys saying "it's a man press not a 2-2-1", it's a MATCH-UP ZONE PRESS that's based from a 2-2-1 alignment. Just like a match-up zone in the half-court, the position of the offense will determine the position of the defense. So, no it's not a man press - it's a match-up zone press

This is a man to man press. If that's what you want then this is a good video.

Not a bad resource has some basic drill descriptions and techniques for applying full court pressure. However I found the Shaka Smart (a Donovan Protege) DVD more useful and more up to date. Smart goes into greater detail regarding when and how to utilize the trap as well as program mental for the VCU Havoc defense.

Very good dvd. Coach Donovan does a great job breaking down this press from 1 on 1 up to 5 man. Presents it in a fashion that is easy to follow and understand.

Let's get this straight: Coach Donovan is incredible, and his insights and the way he models coaching almost makes this video worth it. However, I'm giving this three stars for the hass-affed way Championshipproductions threw this together. First of all, Coach Donovan didn't have enough time. He said he couldn't get into the individual techniques they emphasize for pressuring the ball & closing traps. This is great for all us coaches who have fundamentally sound, disciplined players who know exactly what to do, but just need practice to fine-tune their timing and to stay in shape. Ugh. We need the whole picture here. Am I being picky? Not for $45 I'm not.
Secondly, the blurb mentions the 1-2-1-1 and the 2-2-1. It's a MAN TO MAN press, people. Any resemblance to the 1-2-1-1 or the 2-2-1 is because that's where the offense is standing.

Very well done. The build up to 5 on 5 is well organized and clearly explained not only in terms of what players should do but why. He also includes several very useful tips that he clearly learned as a player.

This is a good instructional video. Donovan give you build up drills that really breakdown the players responsibilities in the defense. The drills are easy to install and teach. My only issue was that we don't get to see much 5 on 5 action at the end. But this is a great tool for you to learn and teach the man to man full court press.

Donovan is a very impressive teacher. His presentation is extremely thoughtful, organized, and thorough. I most appreciated the detail and nuances he shares with the viewer regarding not only big concepts of his defense, but little aspects of practice drills. His teaching style is very efficient so unlike other instuctional videos he covers a lot of material in a short time.
