Committing turnovers is an absolute killer for all teams. It’s the one in-game scenario where absolutely nothing positive comes out of it for your team. Even when you give up points defensively, while not ideal, you can then possess the ability to either slow down or amp up of the pace of the game with your next inbounds and offensive possession.
When you commit a turnover, however, you’re not only gifting your opponent with a transition-offense opportunity, but you’re also coming up completely empty on an offensive possession of your own – losing the ability for a shot attempt and missing out on the chance to draw a foul and/or work the clock, depending on the pace of play you design.
Even worse, turnovers completely swing the pendulum of momentum to your opponent – whether it be for a fleeting moment, or during a critical time of the game.

Anything you can subsequently do as a coach to lower the amount of turnovers committed by your players dramatically helps your team’s chances to win more games during the course of a season.
Regardless of position, perhaps the single-most important factor for reducing turnovers comes from improving your players’ ability to handle the ball whenever and wherever they receive it on the court.
