Yesterday, Minnesota Lynx Head Coach & GM, Cheryl Reeve, was named the 2020 WNBA Coach of the Year after leading her team to a 14-8 regular season record. Additionally, Minnesota edged the Phoenix Mercury 80-79 on Thursday night to advance to the WNBA semifinals, which will kick off this Sunday.

The Coach of the Year award was Reeve’s third (’11, ’16, ’20) and moves her into a tie with Van Chancellor (’97, ’98, ’99) and Mike Thibault (’06, ’08, ’13) for the most in WNBA history.

Per a press release from the Lynx:

Under Reeve’s tutelage, the Lynx have compiled 232 wins over the last 10 seasons, the most prolific decade run in WNBA history, and have won four WNBA Championships (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017). Since taking over in 2010, Reeve’s 67.7% winning percentage (245–117) ranks first in league history. She is one of only two coaches to win over 60% of their regular season games (Chancellor, 65.5%) and has also recorded the most wins (40) and highest winning percentage (70.2%) in WNBA Playoff history.

As you can see, Reeve is quickly building her case as the greatest coach in the history of the WNBA!

Corner Offense, Set Plays and Practice Drills

Reeve released her first instructional video in 2015. Corner Offense, Set Plays and Practice Drills shows coaches how to:

  • Space the court, open up plays at the rim, and get players clean looks with the “Corner Offense”
  • Maximize the speed and efficiency of your offense using a variety of one-dribble layup and jump shot drills
  • Use pick & Rolls in your secondary break and as a staple set play in the half court

In this clip from the video, Coach Reeve sets up and runs the “Speed Drill”, which she adopted from University of Nebraska head men’s coach, Fred Hoiberg.

Customer coachcraig gave the video a 5-star review and had this to say:

“Really enjoy this video and find the principles and drills of the corner offense to be well articulated by Coach Reeve. We used the Triangle a bit last year and this is a much nicer implementation that better suits my players …”

Loop and Elbow Offenses and Counter Sets

The next instructional video entry from Coach Reeve came in 2016, just after the Minnesota Lynx’s title in 2015 and prior to their championship in 2017. In Loop and Elbow Offenses and Counter Sets, Reeve shares how to:

  • Create mismatches for your best player at any position
  • Neutralize defensive switches and turn the switching action into a scoring opportunity
  • Run an innovative “elevator door screen” that almost guarantees an open shot at the top of the key

The clip below showcases the foundation of the Loop series.

Once again, customers had good things to say about Reeve’s tactics and teaching style:

“Some outstanding ideas here from Reeve. I have used many of these sets with a great amount of success. Loop is indeed hard to defend with the right team. The quick hits are solid as well. There is a lot of great content here.”

Favorite Horns Offense & Actions

Last but not least, in her most recent coaching video, Coach Reeve speaks about the Horns Offense, which has been growing in popularity across all levels of the game. Favorite Horns Offense & Actions will show you how to:

  • Open up the basket and draw the defense out through the use of two players in the high post
  • Teach your players how to play unscripted by knowing what to do on offense when the defense uses a variety of schemes
  • Develop two Iverson series plays that create false action and multiple scoring options for your best players

Reeve’s knowledge of the game is on display as she breaks down what players must do in order to make the Horns offense effective in the sample clip below.

Once again, customers expressed their appreciation for Coach Reeve’s instruction:

“Excellent DVD good horn sets. I love that she covers when the play breaks down which happens often. How to counter traps, switches and ice coverage’s. Clear instruction no wasted time on stories. Excellent Coach and its changing my overall approach to coaching offense. Love Horns!!”
