The linebacker position is one of toughness and discipline. Mike DeWitt, Coppell High School (Texas) defensive coordinator, shows you a drill that you can use to practice the cutback tackle with your linebackers. Staying at depth and tackling with the correct shoulder are keys in the drill.
Cutback Tackle
Drill Summary: Set up with two offensive linemen, a running back and a quarterback on offense (QB can be a coach). On defense, match the offensive linemen with D-linemen and have an outside linebacker off the ball. The goal of the outside linebacker is to cover the QB keep while also being able to fill and cutback. On the handoff, the linebacker makes a static read while staying at depth so they can run downhill for the cutback. When making a cutback tackle, linebackers must lead with their same leg and same shoulder to prevent the running back from gaining extra yardage.
