Defensive coaches are always looking for ways to be creative on defense to slow down opposing offenses. Ron Ernst, Ripon College head coach and 2-time MWC Champion, details his 3-3 defense “Stack” formation and how to run it against a pro set with two backs and one tight end.
“Stack” vs. Pro (2×1)
Drill Summary: In the 3-3 formation, the tackle and end start in a 4-technique and cover the B-gaps. Meanwhile, the nose starts in a 0-technique and fills the weak A-gap. The Sam and Will linebackers are responsible for the C-gaps, and the Mike linebacker heads up the A-gap. In this formation, the Spur position lines up 1-on-1 against the tight end. Occasionally, if they think the play is going to be a run, Coach Ernst’s team brings the Bandit safety into a 2-on-2 off tackle. Otherwise, the safeties fill the alleys and the corners offer late support.
