Flare screens are a wrinkle that many offenses are utilizing more and more in today’s game. Frank Allocco, University of San Francisco associate head coach and the only coach in California high school history to take two schools to a state title, explains his method of defending a flare screen.
Defending Flares
Drill Summary: When the screener comes to make a pick, the defender getting the player receiving the screen must know what type of player their man is. If the offensive player is a non-shooter, going under the screen is fine. If the offensive player is a shooter, the defender must go over the top to avoid allowing an open shot. On both actions, the defender of the screener must help and take away a possible slip to the basket.
