Having the ability to read the opponent’s setter is an essential trait in today’s middle blocker. Nancy Dorsey, St. James Academy (Kansas) head coach and 2015 AVCA National High School Coach of the Year, gives you a drill that will help you train your middle blockers to read the hips of opposing setters.
Flinch Drill
Drill Summary: Set up with a middle blocker on one side of the net and a setter, two outside catchers and a coach with a cart of balls on the other side. The coach feeds a setter balls one at a time. As the setter prepares to make a set to either side of the court, the middle blocker must make a read and commit to a side. Whether it’s the side the setter hits to or not, the middle must do the footwork and make a block attempt. Focus on keeping hips loaded and hands high.
