Creighton University head coach Greg McDermott has his team use three different kinds of closeouts: the Kobe, the Korver and the Rondo. Learn all three closeouts in the “Three Line Closeouts” drill and watch your team improve at guarding opposing players with unique skillsets.
Three Line Closeouts
Drill Summary: Players form three lines underneath the basket and three coaches set up around the perimeter (one at each wing and one at the top of the key). On the whistle, the player at the front of each line closes out to their corresponding coach. After the closeout, the coach moves the ball to the left or right, simulating the offensive player taking a dribble that direction. The defender must defensive slide in whatever direction the coach moves the ball.
Keys to the Drill:
1) Start breaking down just over halfway to the offensive player.
2) Close out with high hands.
3) Break out with a good lead step.
4) Know what kind of player you’re closing out on.
