In short, complete mental toughness! Gable credits all of his success on the mat - both as an athlete and as a coach - to strong mental toughness. 3x NCAA Champions ('07, '03 & '02),
3x National "Coach of the Year;" member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2005)

The information passed along by Robinson on this DVD will eliminate your opponent's escape opportunities!

In addition, these defensive drills benefit those wrestlers who have trouble penetrating by turning their defense into counter offense. Gable concludes with four drills to finish practice. Practice Planning and Program Building for WrestlingPractice Planning and Program Building for Wrestling

with Rob Koll,
Cornell University Head Coach;

  • 2017 EIWA Champions - 11 consecutive EIWA Conference Championships (2007-17)
  • 2017 EIWA Coach of the Year
  • 15 consecutive Ivy League titles (2003-17)
  • Back-to-Back NCAA Championships Runner-Up (2010-11)
  • 2011 NWCA National Duals Champions
  • 2005 NWCA Division I Coach of the Year
  • 2x World Cup Champion
  • NCAA Champ and 4x All-American

Rob Koll has built Cornell into a national power on the wrestling mat. For the past nine years, Cornell has finished in top 20 at the NCAA Championships - including runner-up in 2010, as well as winning eight straight league championships.

Now, you can get the same drills and techniques that Coach Koll uses in his room everyday.

Koll begins with a typical warm-up session that contains more than 15 exercises. His warm-up session takes 15 minutes and features a lot of gymnastics techniques to maximize your wrestlers' athleticism. The exercises start basic and move to advanced drills - all relating to wrestling in some way.

In addition, Koll includes more than 10 conditioning drills with a sport specific twist. These drills all feature full body motion and concentrate on quick starts and explosiveness.

To compliment the warm-up, you will see over 25 wrestling drills that Koll focuses on for 30 minutes to an hour every day in practice. These short offense and defense drills focus on technique, work on set-ups and foot motion, while developing conditioning, hip power and athleticism - all in a match-like setting. Among the techniques you'll see are shrugs, knee taps, high and low singles, bar arms, foot fighting and more.

Moving off the mat, Koll gives you his philosophy behind how he built his program to the level it is today. He touches on a number of topics, including:

  • Sleep deprivation - More sleep allows your athletes to convert short term memory to long term and build up muscle
  • Micro practices - get same amount of work from the team, but not in a team setting. Allows you to individualize technique and gives you increased contact with wrestlers - which in turn gets them to feel more connected to the program and coaches);
  • Practice phases - See different practice routines from October to December, January to February and for the last month of the year.
  • Strength Training - See the key to Cornell's success - volume and intensity. Koll discusses three different phases of strength training, which has resulted in his wrestlers have maintained or gained strength throughout the season.

5x World Team member

Give your wrestler and team a distinct advantage once they lock up - whether it's Greco-Roman, Freestyle, or Folkstyle - with this valuable collection of techniques to score critical back points off your takedowns.

Rob Hermann, Olympic Team Coach and 5-time National Champion--who has trained Olympic Champion Rulon Gardner and Olympic Medalists Dennis Hall and Garrett Lowney--shares upper body tips in seven different categories. These tips can be used to dominate from the feet in Folkstyle, Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling. Coach Hermann has carefully selected techniques that can be applied to all three styles of wrestling. This DVD a perfect tool for the serious competitor and coach.

Locks, Ties, and Throws
The moves and positions demonstrated by Coach Hermann focus on becoming more effective from a variety of positions. Using these techniques, you and your athletes will learn:

  • The correct way to attack using a unique variation of the Russian Tie and five finishes from that tie, including the Bonsai Arm Throw
  • A dominating front headlock series including the Culpa and the Schultz
  • Proper technique for executing arm throws, shoulder throws and body locks
  • Three versions of the head-and-arm, including a finishing technique and effective counter
Upper Body Technique
Every complete wrestler needs to possess several five point moves that can be executed with confidence at any point in the match. Coach Hermann demonstrates 16 different five point moves. These takedowns are high percentage moves, many of which will work in all three wrestling styles: Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman.

Coach Hermann also focuses on attacking from several different positions, including the Russian Tie, front headlock and an Underhook Series. In his front headlock series, you will learn high percentage moves such as the "Culpa" and the "Dave Shultz" that are used on the elite world level, yet simple enough to be applied in any wrestling room. Coach Hermann presents several moves for advanced wrestlers such as the Korean Front Head Lock.

Additionally, Coach Hermann adds a unique finish to an arm drag, a drill for developing quick hands and a way to negate an opponent's strength to apply a chicken wing.

Coach Hermann presents moves in a step-by-step, easy to understand fashion, with language that is clear and specific. During the instruction phase, each move is broken down into sub-steps with critical phases highlighted. Also, moves are shown at various vantage points to give the full benefit of visual learning. Coach Hermann then shows what each technique looks like at live wrestling speed several times so viewers can put the move together visually.

Upper body wrestling is an often overlooked aspect in today's wrestling environment. Every wrestler needs to know five point moves when they are down in a match. These techniques are essential for wrestlers who want to learn to score from the tie up position in all three wrestling styles.

This DVD is comprised of many of the best and most comprehensive upper body techniques available. Coach Hermann is a highly sought after coach and clinician - take advantage of his expertise by learning explosive upper body moves!

Weight Room to Wrestling RoomWeight Room to Wrestling Room
with Dave Malecek, University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Head Coach;
5x conference coach of the year; 5 straight WIAC conference championships (2007-10); Five top 3 finishes in the DIII National Tournament in six seasons; 2007 NCAA Rookie Coach of the Year; All-American wrestler at UNI.

Add a new twist to the old classics for conditioning.

Conditioning is a critical part of any wrestling program. Having coached his UW-LaCrosse Eagles to top three finishes in each of his first five seasons, Dave Malacek has proven he can transfer work done in the weight room to the wrestling mat.

In this wrestling DVD, Coach Malecek demonstrates many of his favorite exercises that emphasize the specific needs of wrestlers. He shows you how to make simple strength training drills into wrestling specific activities that can be done before, during, or after practice. Each exercise is demonstrated, and then followed up with a wrestling drill/situation for your athletes to better understand the importance of the exercise.

Coach Malecek provides exercises that vary from old classics - such as pushups - to the trending tools of today - like battle ropes and resistance bands. All exercises can be completed in the wrestling room instead of traveling to the weight room. Exercises covered include:

  • Push-Ups and Bench Press - Your wrestler will explode to his feet from the bottom referee's position and recover quicker when under a sprawled opponent.
  • Cleans and Squats - Develop your wrestler's ability to return his opponent to the mat, to perform a stand-up, and to clear an opponent's collar-tie into a pass-by.
  • "Stretchy Ropes" - Use these resistance bands to strengthen your wrestler's snap downs, snapping his opponents' heads down to the mat to score easily.
  • Battle Ropes - Wave your wrestler's arms repeatedly in small or big motions to improve forearm and grip strength, leading to dominant hand fighting skills.
  • Curls - Conditioning the biceps with curls allows your wrestler to win the underhook position.
  • Quick Feet - These agility exercises improve movement from the neutral position, ensuring quick feet during takedown finishes and stand-ups.
When your athletes complete wrestling drills that mimic the actions of their conditioning exercises they will become more invested in their workouts. These exercises, when incorporated into tough practices, will help your team get over that "fear of failure" and enable them to get past the point of exhaustion and to still push hard.

Strength and conditioning is crucial to the development of any wrestler. If you are having a hard time setting up a strength and conditioning program to maximize your wrestlers' potential, this video allows you to get more specific training in a very efficient format.

All-American Wrestler at Virginia; 2000 ACC Wrestler of the Year; member of the 50th Anniversary ACC Wrestling Team
  • Build core concepts and skills while changing up their routine
  • Learn how to keep an opponent off balance
  • Focus on the four main positions from the feet
  • Build good position into every portion of practice
  • Warm-up and Conditioning Drills
    Coach Garland demonstrates several types of warm-up sequences that progress from light intensity, to intermediate intensity, and to a high intensity session. Garland gives you a variety of drills that will increase a wrestler's speed, strength, and cardiovascular endurance. One of the unique things about this video is that each of the drills builds on earlier drills and motor skills, so that wrestlers can perform them more effectively and see how the skills are put together in order to create the ultimate chain wrestler.

    From the Feet
    Learn drills for making wrestlers more effective on their feet. Coach Garland reveals drills that focus on the four main positions in wrestling (Single Leg Position, Hi-Crotch Position, Double Leg Position, and the Re-Shot), as well as short offensive drills that will help wrestlers become more complete on their feet. These drills include individual and partner drills and work on everything from shot drills to proper short offensive drills. Garland goes over each position with an emphasis on the perfect attack position and the ability to defend.

    Scrambling drills are also taught in meticulous detail. These drills focus on defending a low single leg attack and stopping funk counters. With the proliferation of these techniques at the high school and college levels, it is imperative that wrestlers have a defense for them.

    Bottom Position
    Discover specific drills that can be used at practice in order to fight common positions and create muscle memory. The bottom position drills cover how to defend basic breakdowns such as the Tight Waist, Spiral Ride, and Ankle Ride. This video emphasizes the little things that will make it easier for wrestlers to escape and score from the bottom position.

    Top Position
    From the top position, Garland goes over his philosophy, and how to use these drills to become a dominant top wrestler. You'll see the "Grind Ride" drill, a position the University of Virginia uses to dominate their opponents.

    The drills covered in this video will keep your team in perfect position during matches and will keep your wrestlers excited about practice, leaving the drudgery of traditional practice behind.

    with Mark Perry, University of Illinois Associate Head Coach;
    2013 Amateur Wrestling News Division I Assistant Coach of the Year;2x NCAA Champion and 4x All-American at the University of Iowa; 2005 NWCA Rookie of the Year; won the Gorrarian Trophy at the 2007 NCAA Championships

    Mark Perry has a rare unique perspective on wrestling: His uncle is legendary Oklahoma State Coach John Smith; in addition, Coach Perry wrestled in high school at Blair Academy under Jeff Buxton and finally learned the "Iowa way" of the sport from Tom Brands while wrestling in college. Combining his knowledge and first-hand experience, Coach Perry has developed a highly effective set of drills, from the feet and on the mat, that can take anyone to the next level of success.

    Coach Perry's drills will help build a foundation of core techniques and philosophies from all positions. He explains his philosophy on drilling and how to properly execute each drill to create the most effective wrestlers. You'll also hear several examples of how his athletes are constantly using these drills to improve at even the highest levels.

    Drills from the Feet - Coach Perry demonstrates four drills that help build a great base of chain wrestling from your feet to create dominate wrestlers in the neutral position. Drills include:

    • A shot position drill to train wrestlers to stay in good position to better finish leg attacks.
    • A drill to recover from bad position and still finish your shot. At some point, all wrestlers wind up in a bad position. The confidence to continually attack comes, in part, from the confidence that one can recover if their attack is stopped.

    Drills from the Bottom Position - Coach Perry puts his athletes in realistic situations to create drills that will help them get out of the bottom position effectively. His drills stress the attitude needed to get away from any opponent. You'll learn the base and no wrists drill to better develop the two keys to getting away.

    Drills from the Top Position - Coach Perry gives you the tools to create dominate wrestlers from the top position using the latest technique. In this segment, he again stresses the attitude needed to be a dominant top wrestler. He demonstrates several drills to ride and turn your opponent.

    Using his wrestlers to demonstrate the effective use of drills, Coach Perry offers a blueprint of drills to create effective chain wrestlers who can score from any position.

    Through a series of drills for the neutral position, Coach Perry explains a formula for success that blends two proven styles of wrestling to create a complete wrestler. He carefully highlights some high priority positions that athletes need to master to win at the highest level.

    Stance - The drills in this segment emphasize stance and position. From the stance, Coach Perry explains the importance hand placement and the position of the head and body relative to the mat. He also covers the way a wrestler should move in his stance, including the role of effective footwork, how to incorporate fakes and how to create angles.

    Offensive Philosophies - Coach Perry shares examples of how offensive attacks in practice (not just in ideal drilling situations) create a chain wrestler who can use multiple options to score. For example, if a wrestler fakes, then goes to one attack that's defended, he can change direction and go to a different attack.

    Short Offense philosophies - Coach Perry covers ways for a wrestler to defend on his feet to avoid giving up easy points against short offense and go-behinds. To become an elite wrestler, your wrestlers must avoid giving up easy points, and have the ability to able to score from any position on the mat. Teach them how to keep focus when they miss or shot and how to be tough on their feet with the drills in this DVD.

    Whether you are trying to get your middle or high school team to the next level or you're an athlete trying to take your wrestling to the next level, the philosophies stressed in this DVD can be your a valuable coaching tool to get there.

    The Art of Hand FightingThe Art of Hand Fighting
    with Mark Ironside,
    2x NCAA Champ and 4x All-American at the University of Iowa; 1998 Dan Hodge Trophy winner

    Hand fighting is an essential wrestling skill. Two-time National Champion Mark Ironside shares drills for becoming an effective hand fighter and, in turn, a more dangerous wrestler on your feet.

    Hand fighting is about moving your opponent so that you can set up your attacks. Coach Ironside takes a novel approach to the skill: He believes that a level of high intensity and complete domination must be maintained throughout the match. He stresses that wrestlers should set a fast pace and maintain it throughout the match.

    Coach Ironside covers the basic strategy of hand fighting in the neutral position, such as not reaching, keeping elbows close, using heavy hands, applying constant pressure and immediately re-attacking. He demonstrates how to correctly close the gap when hand fighting, which maintains a good position and makes it easier to move an opponent.

    He shares several drills for quickly improving positioning, including a push-pull drill that teaches wrestlers to move their hands and feet together. From these hand fighting techniques, Coach Ironside shows how to get and use four control ties, such as the 2-1, double inside tie and inside tie/wrist combination. He shows ways to control and clear these ties that will move your opponent. Each of these ties works together to create a potent offense that will exhaust your opponent. While demonstrating these ties, Coach Ironside also shows several takedowns.

    Finally, Coach Ironside demonstrates how to drill hand fighting with a partner and how to clear a front head lock.

    Don't just hand fight; use it to create an offense that cannot be beat! Let Mark Ironside show you how to enhance your hand fighting skills to score from the neutral position.

    The Art of Breakdowns: Creating Constant Grinding PressureThe Art of Breakdowns: Creating Constant Grinding Pressure
    with Mark Ironside,
    2x NCAA Champ and 4x All-American at the University of Iowa; 1998 Dan Hodge Trophy winner

    The difference between a good wrestler and a great wrestler is knowing how to break your opponent down and keep him down. Dan Hodge Trophy winner Mark Ironside teaches the skills necessary to dominate from the top position. His techniques center on applying constant, grinding pressure and the importance of always having forward pressure from the top position.

    Coach Ironside demonstrates four breakdowns that span all the various levels of wrestling, and explains the finer points of each. He shows the Chop & Drive, Deep Waist Far Ankle, Spiral Ride, and Hook Ankle. He also shares six effective turns from these breakdowns, explaining the best option to use depending on how the bottom man reacts. He demonstrates a base drill to make wrestlers work both sides of their opponent, training them to flow from one breakdown to another until the opponent is exhausted. This also serves as a great conditioning drill.

    He concludes the video by demonstrating how to return an opponent to the mat once they reach their feet. You'll see two versions-- how to bring him to the mat by elevating him and another by rotating him down from his hips.

    Go from good to great with these top breakdowns and skills.

    2015 and 2010 ACC Champions; 2010 ACC Coach of the Year;
    All-American Wrestler at Virginia; 2000 ACC Wrestler of the Year; member of the 50th Anniversary ACC Wrestling Team

    How to Cradle Your Opponent when They Shoot on You
    The most common attack in both folkstyle and freestyle wrestling is the single leg. Learning baseline defense is the most important skill but being able to go straight for points will give you a massive edge over the competition. Coach Garland demonstrates how to turn your opponent's offense into your offense, enabling your wrestler to score in bunches. Cradle finishes are covered from the single leg defense with the head inside, head outside single defense, and off of a low single leg attempt by your opponent. All his attacks come from a philosophical change of getting the legs back to attacking into the man. This change allows you to score almost at will from your feet.

    Cradle from the Offensive Neutral Position
    In the second segment, Coach Garland demonstrates how to offensively attack from the feet with the cradle. This includes options from a front headlock and a re-shot. The front headlock is a game changer in itself but when you add Coach Garland's cradle series to it, you can become unbeatable on your feet. He shows how to use the body's natural movement patterns to set up the cradle. Once you get down the positioning, you can almost always score.

    Cradle from the Top Position
    Finally, Coach Garland demonstrates the traditional approach to scoring with a cradle from the top position. This segment includes breakdowns, setups and finishing techniques for cross-face and near-side cradles. Although there is one dominant way to attack with the cradle, Coach Garland demonstrates his spin on hand positioning and where the legs are relative to the bottom man so that he gets a fall every time.

    All positions in wrestling require drilling and muscle memory in order to make them work. Coach Garland does a fantastic job of showing this throughout the presentation. You'll see drills from the feet as well as drills from the classic top position. There's also a series of pinning drills that focuses on an "always look for the fall" mentality.

    This is a fantastic set with a lot of useful information that allows coaches and wrestlers to become prolific cradling wrestlers. Coach Garland brings great teaching style to the presentation, making it easy for everyone to understand the subtle nuances that make this series unique. The tech fall and pin points resulting from these techniques will help your team become a better dual and tournament team.

    USA Wrestling Silver Coaches Clinic: Peaking, Periodization and Mental Toughness TrainingUSA Wrestling Silver Coaches Clinic: Peaking, Periodization and Mental Toughness Training
    with Terry Steiner,
    US National Women's Team Head Coach,
    NCAA Champion and 3x All American (Iowa); Distinguished member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame

    and Emma Randall,
    US National Women's Team Assistant Coach,
    the first woman to earn Gold Level Certification in the USA Wrestling National Coaches Education Program

    Terry Steiner: Peaking and Periodization

    While many coaches have a deep knowledge of teaching and technique, it can be difficult to develop athletes over multiple seasons in a way that will allow them to meet their goals.

    US Women's National Freestyle Coach, Terry Steiner, discusses the methodology that USA Wrestling uses to manage athletes over the course of a 4-year Olympic cycle. In this plan, Steiner talks about training phases and the development of Personal Evaluation Rating Technique charts. This methodology can easily be adapted to a 4-year high school career or a collegiate career.

    4-Year Plan

    Coach Steiner starts off by emphasizing that you must figure out what you want to accomplish and what you want your wrestlers to look like. Once you know what you want your athletes to look like, start planning on how to get there. He breaks down the four years of an Olympic cycle and how his coaching staff and athletes approach them. Each year has a specific purpose, emphasizing technique, strength and conditioning, competition, travel, and sports psychology.

    Managing Volume and Intensity

    It's difficult to manage volume and intensity in a way that allows athletes to grow while staying healthy and being fresh for competition. Learn how Steiner and his staff quantify both volume and intensity, and how he evolves these over the course of a competitive season and off-season. He also explains how to use feedback from athletes to re-calibrate intensity ratings, and how to work with specific athletes to come up with a workout plan that will allow them to thrive.

    PERT Charts

    Athletes develop differently and individual assessment is a piece of the puzzle to look at as they move toward achieving long-term improvement and realizing their full potential. The main methodology used by Coach Steiner to identify his athletes' strengths and weakness is the PERT (Personal Evaluation Rating Technique) chart. PERT charts will drive your curriculum and allow you to know what your wrestlers are learning - and more importantly - NOT learning. These charts will maximize the efficiency of your practices.

    Each athlete is rated by both themselves and the coaching staff in a variety of areas. When each attribute is charted, it is easy to see which technical deficiencies the team has, cumulatively, and which areas need additional focus.

    Coach Steiner offers a complete methodology for managing the peaks in the development of your team over a multi-year period. This video is great for coaches at the high school level and higher.

    Emma Randall: Mental Toughness Training

    Teaching a move is easy, but teaching your wrestler to be confident in that move in a competitive setting is a whole other animal. Many athletes are physically the same, so what makes the difference between a champion and an average wrestler? The right mentality and confidence!

    Taking care of the athlete's confidence is an ongoing battle. It's give and take with your athletes to get them to open up and make an honest assessment of themselves. US National Women's Team Assistant Coach, Emma Randall, shares relevant sports psychology information and data to help improve all wrestlers and coaches.

    Understanding Your Athletes and Preparing Them for Matches

    Each of your wrestler's weaknesses will be different, but their mental preparedness may be the most difficult issue to solve. Coach Randall has created a program that helps coaches analyze their wrestlers' confidence levels. She discusses techniques that can be used to help build confidence before stepping out onto the mat. By setting goals and focusing on what they can control, Coach Randall has helped some of the best wrestlers in the country improve their mindsets.

    Match Day

    How wrestlers react to match situations and officials also impacts their confidence. Coach Randall covers the different aspects wrestlers will face throughout a competition that may decrease their confidence in themselves. She builds an environment of learning at all times and knows how to deal with distractions at the competition location. You'll also learn how to handle outside variables wrestlers can't control, like officials and the crowd.

    Coach Randall can help wrestlers and coaches at any level achieve a mental competitive edge!

    Mental Training Workshop: Training for Toughness On and Off the Mat
    with Steve Fraser, 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist in Greco, former US National Team-Greco-Roman Head Coach

    Coach Fraser has always been known for being mentally tough. Once we define what toughness is, we can search for our ideal competitive state. What gets us hyped appropriately to compete at the ideal level? How do we "force" ourselves to get into that state in which we are ready to compete? This video explores toughness and how we can track it.

    Learning to break your opponent begins with your training partners in the room. The training tool that Coach Fraser loves to use is the grind match. These are anywhere from a 1 hr to 2 hr match in which there is no stopping. This teaches wrestlers to slow down and continue wrestling when they are tired, as well as how to explode when they are physically beat!

    Achieving 'Flow' in Wrestling
    with Matt Lindland, US National Team-Greco-Roman Head Coach; 2000 Olympic silver medalist and 2001 World silver medalist

    Matt Lindland teaches you how to create a practice environment to get into the flow state. You'll find out how to get your athletes to love the sport by keeping practice times limited. Let athletes want more, and they will come to practice energized and excited! Emphasis is placed on creating a hunger for athletes to want to learn more. Wrestlers in this system are encouraged to find what techniques work for them, and how they can make techniques their own. Coaches should realize that not all techniques work (or work the same) for all wrestlers. Wrestling is a martial art, and coaches should encourage their athletes to become artists.

    All Access Wrestling Practice: 3 Phase Training System with Steve CostanzoAll Access Wrestling Practice: 3 Phase Training System with Steve Costanzo

    with Steve Costanzo,
    St. Cloud State University Head Coach;
    2018 NCAA DII National Champions - third title in four years, including back-to-back National Championships (2016-17);
    2018 NWCA DII National Duals Champions;
    2016 NCAA DII Coach of the Year;
    2018 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Champions - winners of seven straight conference titles (2012-18) and 11 overall; 5x NSIC Coach of the Year; former Dana College Head Coach - 2016 NAIA National Champions

    Practice is where the most development happens in your wrestlers. As a coach, it's important to understand how to structure your practices throughout the season in a way that helps your athletes peak at the right time, so they can maximize their success at the end of the year during regional and conference tournaments.

    A distinguishing characteristic of the St Cloud Huskies' practice sessions is the simple, effective coaching style of Steve Costanzo. You will see that he encourages his athletes to stick to high-percentage moves throughout their training; moves that you will be able to observe and apply to your own training or coaching.

    Phase 1: Pre-Season (Disc 1 & 2)

    Beginning mid-October through mid-December, Coach Costanzo and his staff introduce their training system to wrestlers and focus primarily on building core technique and integrating those skills during longer, intense live wrestling sessions. Practices start with a dynamic warm up consisting of a combination of calisthenics, band exercise and wrestling drills.

    During the first practice, Coach Costanzo and his staff review the bent leg turk series and cradle series, while also illustrating how to build up to intense live wrestling sessions through stance and motion drills and 80/50 movement drills. The 80/50 drill is used to develop confidence in a wrestler's takedowns and hand fighting skills. It teaches wrestlers to get to an angle so they can effectively attack the legs. It also teaches wrestlers how to transition from hand fighting to leg attacks.

    In the second practice, Coach Costanzo walks us through a 90-minute pre-season wrestling practice that's a little unconventional because live wrestling is done in the first half of practice and the technical side of things is focused on at the end. Match length and live go's can last anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes. Costanzo explains that he gets the team to focus on a grinding type of training during phase one, typically lasting no more than 90 minutes.

    Drills focus on specific wrestling skills, such as the bull ride drill, to work on wrestlers' riding skills and the Abas roll and scrambling drill to work on leg passes and the ability to wrestle through all types of positions and scenarios.

    The last half of practice focuses on live situational wrestling and learning a cradle series. Assistant coach Brady Wilson shows the Huskie approach to breaking someone down, and how he splits the back into three parts. First, Wilson shows how to use this knowledge to successfully break the bottom man down, so the top wrestler can successfully start their cradle series. From there, Wilson goes into detail on how to execute the inside and outside cradle, as well as the situations in which a cradle presents itself.

    Phase 2: Mid-Season (Disc 3)

    From mid-December through the end of January, Costanzo shows how to focus on more chain wrestling through key drills, individual coaching, and shorter live wrestling sessions. With most of the team's core technique established at this time, the main focus of the practice is hard situational drilling to enhance technique that was developed during the first phase and live wrestling to help prepare the wrestlers for competition. Costanzo shows how to reinforce solid positions through key drills such as Position Matches, the Maintain Position Drill, and actively sparring through awkward positions.

    Phase 3: Late-Season

    From the beginning of February through the end of the season, Coach Costanzo shows how cutting practice times shorter and becoming more efficient with overall time on the mat can help your wrestlers peak at tournament time. With more intense practices that focus on constant drilling and short, situational wrestling sessions, Coach Costanzo reveals how you can get your whole team, both starters and non-starters, to peak at the end of the season. During this session, the coaching staff shows how to run a short, highly-intense practice with drills that promote fast reaction time and explosiveness, but allow wrestlers to drill at a high pace on individualized technique.

    Learn how to master the practice room, develop your wrestlers throughout the season, and get your team prepared to wrestle their best when it counts - at the end of the year! 1986 NCAA Champion and 2x All-American wrestler at the University of Iowa

    Are you wondering what you can do to improve practice? Do you want to know if you're doing the right things? Many coaches spend time wondering if what they're doing is the right thing for their team.

    Kevin Dresser has experienced great success in high school and college as a coach. In this video, he describes some of the biggest mistakes he has made as a coach. He also passes on what he's learned from those mistakes to allow you an opportunity to avoid making the same mistakes.

    Coach Dresser's Keys to Success

    The first part of the video outlines what Dresser calls his practice 'anatomy.' He has eight general steps that he uses everyday leading into his competition weekend. These begin with warm-ups (when to warm up hard and when to warm up subdued) and complete with live wrestling. He bookends these steps with a pre-practice talk and closes with an exit message. These are both important to the athlete as you bring them into a practice, as well as when you send them forward from practice.

    'The 5 Biggest Mistakes a Coach Can Make'

    Coach Dresser follows up practice plans with his five biggest mistakes that you can make as a coach. These come from many years being on one side of the whistle. The biggest one is not showing every move you know. Your athletes will learn the flashy/fun stuff on their own, but to win, they have to be good at the basics.

    Dresser is also a huge proponent of the team concept, even as far as how he utilizes his staff and communication with those over him in the food chain. He concludes with an insightful, experience-laden perspective on warning signals of over-training (especially high school athletes).

    'The 5 Most Important Things to Build a Championship Program'

    Coach Dresser completes his session by sharing program-building philosophies. Thoughts on building from the ground up in your school, becoming someone who is respected and embodies the values you will want in your athletes such as hard work. The 'grassroots' style of program building will eventually get people into the seats and have your community, parents and administrators supporting you. He emphasizes the team concept once again, but places more importance on self-development and out-working everyone else you compete against.

    Success isn't just measured in wins and losses; it has to be also measured in the incremental steps necessary to get to the top and then sustain it. Whether you are a rookie coach, or have been coaching for numerous years, this video contains information that anyone can use to grow!

    Are you ready to turn your wrestlers into great wrestlers and help them get wins over the toughest opponents on their schedule? Gary Mayabb has developed a system over the years that has allowed his wrestlers, some of whom came into the season as average-at-best wrestlers, to be able to compete with, and even beat, some of the highest-skilled wrestlers they've faced by the conclusion of the season.

    In this video, Mayabb begins with his philosophy and how he developed this system. Beginning with using the basics to gain the advantage, Mayabb discusses the importance for wrestlers to stay "in the box" with their stance while analyzing their opponents.

    From there, Mayabb uses the two most common takedowns, singles and doubles, as the basis to begin chain wrestling. Before getting into a single or double, Mayabb demonstrates four different setups to get to a takedown based on the opponent's reactions. After the takedown you'll get four finishes, including drills, to help perfect the top riding position in Mayabb's "Flat Iron" drilling sessions.

    Coach Mayabb and his staff spent years fine-tuning this system that has led to multiple championships and great successes and accomplishments for the variety of wrestlers he has coached. If your lineup isn't 'stacked' with top-tier, high-performing wrestlers going into the season, this is a great resource to use to help your athletes outperform their expectations and end their season, and their careers, on an upward swing!

    2007 NCAA Rookie Coach of the Year; led UW-L to a top-four finish at the NCAA D-III National Championships in seven straight seasons (2007-2013)

    In this video, UW-Lacrosse's Dave Malecek dives into an area of wrestling where you can rack up points: transitions. He demonstrates various drilling techniques that he uses within his own program to help his athletes take advantage of their natural areas of strength. You'll learn all about chain wrestling from your wrestlers' core positions and how to improve their overall transition skills.

    Core Move

    Developing a "core", or a 'go-to' move, is an essential aspect of Coach Malecek's approach to transition wrestling. Each sequence of moves always ends with the wrestler's chosen core move. This technique helps build muscle memory and allows athletes to complete a smoother transition from move to move.

    Chain Wrestling

    Coach Malecek focuses on chain wrestling for his athletes. He firmly believes that they can score more points if they begin with positions where they already feel comfortable and strong.

    You'll see Malecek and his wrestlers begin with their final turns for points. From there, they move on to their breakdown and transitioning to those turns. Finally, they slowly progress to attacks on their feet and then ultimately transition to their turns.

    Malecek shows the importance isn't just in the traditional approach to transitioning to a turn, but flipping that approach upside down and working backward. Sometimes, the best way to approach a challenging situation is to hit it from the complete opposite side. You'll get some ideas that buck traditional logic that have helped Coach Malecek's athletes win big matches.

    If you want an insightful look into how to better drill transitions, this video from Coach Malecek is a great choice. Score more points and win more duals this season!

    Structuring Practice

    Coach Jackson explains how he structures practice in terms of assigning assistant coaches to coach specific wrestlers based on the rapport each coach has with different athletes. Additionally, the structure of drill sessions is discussed with an emphasis on wrestlers drilling the holds they feel most comfortable with. Fundamentals must continually be stressed, and several great coaching points are shared throughout the drill session.

    Pinning Combinations

    You'll watch as Jackson's team drills pinning combinations, including a near side cradle and arm bar. Practice concludes with a live wrestling session in which athletes focus on improving positions rather than completing a full match. Situational wrestling is covered in-depth and serves as a huge learning curve accelerator for young wrestlers while limiting risk of injury during an intense practice.

    Chain Wrestling and Live Wrestling Drills

    Coach Jackson and his staff demonstrate some of the creative practice session structures they have found to keep practices engaging and purposeful. You'll see the "grind match drill" (which is also a great conditioning drill), live wrestling drills such as the "12 point drill' and "3 way drill", and several high intensity exercises that teach, and reinforce, positioning skills and hand fighting.

    Escapes and Reversal Techniques

    Several escape techniques are taught and drilled in these practice sessions. Included are many ways to create motion to execute both an inside leg and outside leg stand up. Also taught is how to get away from your opponent once they're on their feet, as well as leg in the air defense.

    Jackson and his staff work with their wrestlers on several ways to create motion to set up a stand up, plus set ups and finishes to the front headlock series. You'll also see how the switch and switch defense are taught and drilled by Jackson and his staff.

    Overall, this is an excellent video presentation over several practice sessions that provide valuable insight into the world of a championship-caliber high school program in one of the most competitive wrestling states in the country. This video set is a 'must have' for all wrestling coaches!

    Short Offense: Techniques to Score!Short Offense: Techniques to Score!

    with Lennie Zalesky,
    Cal Baptist University Head Coach;
    has coached wrestlers to 30 All-American awards and seven individual national championships;
    2013 NCWA National Champions;
    former UC Davis Head Coach;
    2007 Pac-10 Coach of the Year;
    2018 Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee;
    2018 California Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee;
    2010 Alaska Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee;
    as an athlete, was a 3x All-American at the University of Iowa

    Short offense is a position that isn't often taken advantage of by wrestlers, because most coaches don't focus on it nearly as much as they do on leg attacks, hand fighting and mat work. This is a shame because being good in the short offense position is an opportunity to score easy points off your opponent's shots, whilst expending minimal energy.

    The short offense position commonly occurs after you have nullified your opponent's leg attacks and they are down on their knees. Most of the offensive techniques on this instructional video from Lennie Zalesky are shown from this scenario, but you will also learn a couple of ways to get to the short offense position from your feet.

    Coach Zalesky begins by showing a few situations that commonly lead to the short offense position, and how to recognize it is an opportune time to score easy points for a take down, or a potential pin.

    After an Opponent's Shot

    The first offensive move Zalesky shows is how to block your opponent's shot with your hands, snap them down and get your takedown points with a go-behind. During this section, he explains the intricacies of how to place all your weight onto your opponent, making them feel uncomfortable and hindering them from being able to amount any sort of counterattack. It's an easy move to learn that is helpful for the beginner or advanced wrestler, and to reinforce it, Zalesky shows a couple of ways to drill and practice it so your technique becomes perfect.

    After your opponent has shot in on you and they're on their knees, the most common thing they will do is grab one of your elbows and hope for a stalemate. Coach Zalesky shows several ways to score when your opponent has grabbed your elbow. You will learn how to:

    • Pull your elbow out and snap them back down and get your go-behind points
    • Turn the elbow hold into a pin with two different techniques called the "pancake" and the "drop, slide and catch"
    • Get to an ankle pick when they try to stand up

    On The Elbows

    If your opponent doesn't grab one of your elbows, Coach Zalesky shows how to properly cup your opponent's chin and drag them down so both their elbows are on the mat. Once your opponent is on their elbows, Zalesky shows a series of techniques:

    • How to execute a conventional go-behind, emphasizing the importance of putting all your weight on the opponent with your hips and legs
    • Use a shoulder-to-shoulder pull to get a go-behind
    • Pin your opponent with a chest throw from the double over position

    If your opponent happens to get to one of your legs, Zalesky also shows how to get a pin with a front quarter nelson.

    From the Feet

    Getting to the short offense position after your opponent has shot on you is by far the most common way to get there. However, for the more aggressive wrestler who wants to be the one to initiate the move, Coach Zalesky shows how to bring your opponent down to the mat from the standing position. Whilst on your feet, you can drag your opponent down to the mat either by faking an ankle pick to a front headlock, or using an underhook to circle your opponent into the front headlock position.

    Overall, this is an excellent video that shows coaches and wrestlers multiple scoring opportunities from the short offense position. Short offense gives wrestlers an easy way to score points off of opponents' failed leg attacks, whilst expending minimal energy. If the short offense position gives you problems, or you want to become more offensive from it, this instruction you need!

    2x New Jersey Group IV State Championships;
    3x New Jersey High School Coach of the Year, 155-16 record in seven seasons;
    South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee (2009)

    The bottom position is the most neglected position in wrestling. As top wrestlers become more proficient, it is increasingly important to be able to avoid being ridden and turned in a match.

    In this video, Coach Goodale will instruct you on the most common breakdown used in wrestling and demonstrates the most effective way to counter it for an escape. He then transitions to two other breakdowns and the best techniques to score an escape from them as well. Principles are covered that wrestlers should abide by no matter what breakdown is being applied.

    Scoring from the Short Sit Out Position

    Learn multiple ways to score from a short sit out position. Scoring options are based on how the top man reacts to the sit out, including:

    • Elbow fighting and hip heisting for the escape.
    • Recovering position to a tripod and a neutral control tie.
    • Scoring a reversal and big back points from the short sit out.

    Defending Legs

    Help your wrestlers turn an opponent's leg ride into their offense. Bottom wrestlers should be confident that they can score when an opponent puts a leg in using the principles and techniques Coach Goodale emphasizes.

    The individual techniques are then put together into an entire sequence to be used from the bottom position. Drills are demonstrated that incorporate these skills as a progression, so that wrestlers become chain wrestlers, not stopping when their first scoring attempt is stopped.

    With these techniques, Coach Goodale provides the tools every wrestler needs to be confident from the bottom position. Your team will know they can escape and score points from the bottom position, even against top competition!
