In this video, 3x National Championship coach Clare Hanson provides a clear and practical system for developing elite on-ball defenders through simple, repeatable drills that build balance, footwork, positioning, and defensive awareness.

Coach Hanson breaks down the essential skills needed to become a confident and effective defender while demonstrating how coaches can develop those skills through efficient daily training methods.

The focus of the presentation is building a complete defensive foundation. Rather than relying on complex systems, Hanson emphasizes mastering body control, hip positioning, reaction speed, and the ability to read offensive movement. These core defensive qualities allow players to stay connected to their matchup while remaining balanced and composed under pressure.

Using a series of competitive and engaging drills, Coach Hanson demonstrates how to reinforce these fundamentals in ways players can immediately understand and apply. Many of the drills require little to no equipment, making them easy to incorporate into warm-ups, individual development sessions, or team defensive practices.

Key training areas include:
