Developing speed and agility in young athletes increases their chances of future success. In this presentation, Kevin Weigand shows how to set up, teach, organize and execute movement drills to improve athletic ability in youth football players. These basic drills combine the fundamental core values of ability training with football-specific skills that can be modified based on age and ability.

Coach Weigand's program uses 21 drills that consist of lateral movement change of direction, speed acceleration and more. He incorporates football skills like throwing, catching, defending, pursuit and cutting into his drills to make them sport specific. His Cone Drill series improves speed and agility for forward, backward and lateral movements. His catching drills, which work on acceleration and deceleration, work various routes such as the corner, comeback, and stop and go. He's even included an element to build eye-hand coordination.

Coach Weigand shares his "Fastbreak Football" in which two players play a simulated game of football. He explains how he organizes the field of play and gives an idea of how you can vary the drill to build game skills like quick reaction, pursuit, cutting and more.

Competition is also a valuable component of Weigand's SAQ program and is incorporated into several drills. These drills also add a conditioning component that can be structured to create any desired level of conditioning. Weigand's drills are varied, which keeps young athletes focused and attentive.

Speed, agility and quickness training is not just for advanced football players. These drills will keep the attention of your young athletes and help them develop the essential SAQ skills needed as they develop in their athletic careers.
