However, many teams do not do an adequate job of switching and get picked apart by opposing offenses. Those teams who are not good at switching often have problems remembering and executing the essential concepts. In this excellent video, NJCAA Hall of Fame Coach John Pigatti unveils his secrets and teaching methods for great, switching man-to-man defense!Coach Pigatti’s defensive approach to switching has consistently led to more steals, blocks and charges and propelled his teams to the top rankings in defensive statistics over the years. It also helped his 2022 team complete the only undefeated NJCAA D-II national championship season ever! If anyone knows how to teach switching, it's Coach Pigatti. In this instructional coaching video, you’ll get key insight and critical inside information on defensive switching that includes: concepts and principles, toughness drills, build-up drills for teaching switching, defensive strategies to use against a variety of ball screens and more. After watching this video, you’ll be ready to start incorporating more switching into your defense and feel confident in doing so. Defensive Philosophy, Toughness DrillsCoach Pigatti begins by telling you why his teams switch – addressing some common concerns with switching – then provides key defensive data to quell some of those concerns. In every practice, Coach Pigatti describes how he incorporates the intangibles that make his switching style of defense work. He uses and explains the acronym ‘T.O.U.G.H.’ to illustrate how concepts are continuously emphasized throughout each drill and every practice.According to Pigatti, toughness is at the core foundation that makes every great defense successful and he stresses that good defense is all about possessing a tough mindset. To ingrain and reinforce this mindset, Pigatti regularly utilizes an array of toughness drills and in this video, shares his two favorites. The first one is called ‘Loose-Ball, Save-Charge Drill,’ in which players learn how to hustle, secure loose balls and recover quickly while getting into proper help-side position and taking a charge. In the ‘7-Spot Close-Out Drill,’ Pigatti lays the foundation of good switching by explaining how this drill teaches players how to jump to the ball and ‘meet the cutter.’ This drill also serves as an effective way to teach players individually the switching concepts that will be used throughout the whole defense.Switching-Technique Drills, Ball-Screen CoveragesTo teach ‘the how to’ of switching, Coach Pigatti emphasizes the proper defensive rotations that are needed when running this type of defense. To do this, several drills, the ‘3-on-3, X-ing Drill, and the ‘No-Look, 4-on-4 / No-Look Close-Out Drills’ are shown as essential teaching tools that force players to talk on defense, while getting in proper position and learning the vital principle of ‘X-ing out.’The same ideas are then put into place with the demonstration of a drill Pigatti calls the ‘4-on-4, X-ing Drill.’ This time, as this drill begins, the players are put into screening scenarios that reemphasize the teaching points they just learned. Coach Pigatti highlights the importance of the progression of all these drills, and explains that using them in this order, help players understand switching skills and how they translate into team play.Next, Pigatti shows how his program keeps things simple with their approach to ball-screen defense. A few coverages are shown, including:Freezing Technique – which is great to use against quick point guards and helps send the ball back to its starting point.Flat Ball-Screen Coverage (or ‘NBA Screens’ as Pigatti calls them) – which is first demonstrated and then followed by a discussion on how to properly switch on it.Lastly, Coach Pigatti takes some time to show how he puts all of these concepts together, through the use of a live, 5-on-5 drill he demonstrates, called the ‘5-on-5, Switch-and-Change Drill.’ This drill not only allows coaches to incorporate any type of offensive action into it during a 5-on-5 setting, but also works on conditioning, talking, switching and transition defense, all in one drill. If you are thinking about adding more switching coverages into your man-to-man defense, this is ‘the’ must-watch instructional video! The defensive concepts are clearly explained throughout and the way he uses drills will make incorporating these strategies and concepts to your own team turnkey. As the use of ball screens continues to increase at every level of basketball, the defensive concepts that Coach Pigatti puts on display in this highly valuable video will be beneficial to coaches at all levels of competition.73 minutes. 2023.
