Using his Mayhem style of play, Coach McCarthy's team has led NCAA DII in steals per game for four consecutive seasons (2014-17) and have finished in the Top 5 in scoring defense, turnovers forced and turnover margin. Learn how to turn up the pressure with your half-court defense to create turnovers using the "Amoeba" 1-1-3 defense. Ryan McCarthy has improved upon the blueprint created by legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian to create a version of the defense that can be sustained through an entire game. This defensive style will combine both pressure man-to-man and zone principles to be as disruptive as possible for your opponents.Using chalk talk, on-court demonstration, and game footage, Coach McCarthy details the intricacies of his Amoeba defense. You will learn the responsibilities of each player on the floor, practice breakdown drills to teach the necessary fundamentals to play this system, trapping opportunities, and how to counter the primary offensive strategies used against this defense.Build-Up Team Drills for the Amoeba DefenseLearn five practice drills that will teach your players critical concepts to successfully implementing the Amoeba defense. The Forcing to the Baseline drill teaches your players how to closeout and apply intense ball pressure. Players will also learn how to control the direction a dribbler attacks towards the baseline and how to force turnovers on dead ball situations. The Ball Pressure Jump drill teaches your guards how to help one another through rotations when one player gets beat. Other drills will teach your players how to aggressively switch ball screens, take away your opponent's presence down low by fronting the post, and rotate to protect the rim when the ball goes to the corner.Countering Offensive StrategiesMcCarthy demonstrates the effectiveness of this match-up zone by showing you the rotations and responsibilities of players against the most common offensive strategies that will be used against this defense. Odd front alignments - See how to match up your defenders as the ball is brought down the floor, disrupt ball reversals with extreme pass denial, and eliminate options when the ball is at the high post or even force turnovers with digs from different angles. You will also see how to take away cutters when the ball is at the short corner with the X-Out rotation. Even front alignments - Learn how to shift defenders along the perimeter with the reverse bump. Completely neutralize pick & pops by aggressively switching defenders. 1-4 High Sets - Continue to match-up your defenders and apply strong denial with players closest to the ball while providing help support with weak side defenders. Get your players to anticipate dives from the posts. You'll also see how to take away weak side flashes by bumping your defenders.Additionally, you'll see how to smother the paint when opponents try to go with a double low post alignment. You'll also learn how to bump defenders when teams try to distort your match-ups with shallow cuts into the corners. Trapping OpportunitiesThe unusual rotations, aggressive ball pressure, and disruptive pass denials will undoubtedly help you create 'Mayhem' on the basketball court. However, if you want to crank up the pressure to the absolute max, McCarthy gives you trapping options that can make opponents "melt."Coach McCarthy shows you two situations that his team will use to hunt for traps. He will also explain his MELT concept for identifying the ideal candidates to double team. If the traps are beaten, you'll need to have an answer for recovering. You will also see how to regroup your defense with player rotations on any pass out of the traps. This is far and away the best instructional video you will find on the Amoeba defense. Come learn how McCarthy's teams have used 'Mayhem' to propel themselves into a national Division II powerhouse!80 minutes. 2017.The "Mayhem" 2-2-1 Presswith Ryan McCarthy,Fresno State University Women's Head Coach;University of Alaska-Anchorage Women's Head Coach from 2013 to 2025;6x Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year;2016 NCAA D-II Championship Runner-up;was 4th-most total victories in NCAA D-II over the past 10 years with a 309-67 (.822) record;Back-to-Back-to-Back-to-Back Great Northwest Athletic Conference Regular Season Champs (2015-2018);3x NCAA D-II West Region Coach of the Year;Coach Ryan McCarthy has created a Mayhem style of play by using full court pressure to create turnovers into points. Using his Mayhem style of play, Coach McCarthy's team has led NCAA DII in steals per game for four consecutive seasons (2014-17) and have finished in the Top 5 in scoring defense, turnovers forced and turnover margin. The University of Alaska-Anchorage women's team has exploded onto the NCAA D-II scene with 97 wins and a national title appearance in the last three seasons. They create "Mayhem" for their opponents with a full court 2-2-1 pressure system for the entire game. In this video, Ryan McCarthy explains his unique 2-2-1 run & jump press defense that has resulted in so much success. This isn't your traditional 2-2-1 press - it adds run and jump elements, which allows you to determine the pace of play, and will expose poor ball handlers to generate turnovers. The combination of chalk talk, on-court demonstration, and game footage clearly shows you the roles and responsibilities of defenders in this system, how to utilize the 2-2-1 press against common press break strategies, and practice drills to help you make some mayhem for your opponents.Progressive Drills to Build the 2-2-1 PressLearn the fundamentals of this full court pressure system through five breakdown drills that demonstrate the roles and responsibilities of every player on the court. Coach McCarthy calls them drills - and they are - but he's actually building up the press defense one player at a time. Teaching progressively allows players to grasp multiple positions in the press, giving your team the flexibility it will need during the season. The drills include: The Points Game (1-on-1 Drill) - Takes the classic zig zag drill and upgrades the intensity with competition. This drill will work on training your players how to stay in front of the ball, without fouling, while applying pressure and getting deflections. The 2-on-2 drill - Familiarizes your on-ball defenders in the front row with the run and jump approach to trapping in this press. Players will learn the basic principles to trapping and how to rotate out of the trap. The 3-on-3 Drill - Trains your players in the second row how to pick up an offensive player who cuts down the floor after not receiving the ball from the inbounder. The 4-on-4 Drill - This drill allows your second row players to understand how to deny their opponent properly while the one second row player would need to move up and pick up the guard who cuts up the floor after the inbound pass. The 5-on-5 Drill - Goes live against different variation of press breakers so that you can see the different ways to defend them. Handling Common Press BreaksCoach McCarthy explains the roles and responsibilities of every defender on the floor, their terminology for marking the geography of the court, and teaches the basic principles necessary in this defense by showing how the press reacts to the most common types of press breaks you will see: Two Guard Front - Learn how to switch screens and pressure the inbound towards the corners with your front two defenders. You'll see how players find their match-ups before and after the ball is inbounded. McCarthy explains when this press looks to trap, where the ideal trap is located, and who they want to go double the ball. Single Guard Front - Intimidate opponents trying to run this alignment by pinching their point guard with two defenders. You'll also learn how defenders bump responsibilities as receivers flash up the court. Four Across - This alignment attempts to overload your zone press. McCarthy will show you how to match-up and exchange coverages as your opponent cuts to or away from the ball. You'll also see how to handle when the point guard inbounds the ball.Coach McCarthy leaves no page unturned as you look to add a dose of "Mayhem" this season and leave your opponents with a slew of turnovers on the stat sheet and come away with another win for your program!63 minutes. 2017.See all the items in this series! The "Mayhem" Amoeba-Style DefenseThe "Mayhem" 2-2-1 Press See more products by: Ryan McCarthy See other products you might like: Bundle & Save! Yes No Ryan McCarthy Mayhem Defense 2-Pack on April 2, 2021 Currently 2/5 Stars.2/5 Stars 2 by Anonymous I purchased this bundle hoping I could use this system with my 7th Grade AAU team. I have run a traditional 2-2-1 zone (not run and jump) with the Tark Amoeba with youth teams with some success. This video touts changes to the traditional Amoeba slides to allow it to be used as a primary defense but I was not able to figure out the slides that differ from the Tark Amoeba to do so. Additionally, I think it would be helpful for Championship Productions to come up with a type of rating system so purchasers know what videos are appropriate for what age groups. This system has way to many rules for youth kids to understand and is definately not meant for youth players. Championship Productions replies:Coach, Thank you for offering your feedback on this video. We're sorry to hear this one didn’t meet your expectations. I highly recommend getting the 2-pack because the press flows great right into the half court zone. Coach McCarthy does an excellent job of breaking down drills and explaining how the defense works. We use it for varsity boys and they pick it up good. I like it because it is a different defense than most teams are used to seeing. 19 of 19 people found this review helpful. Was this review helpful?
