The days of having a traditional back-to-the-basket post player are gone. Your post players must be able to contribute in some capacity around the arc, whether it be through screens or stepping out to shoot. The Pistol Offense is the perfect way to get some of your best players open to score.

Building from the base set of the Pistol Offense, Georgetown College head coach and two-time NAIA National Champion, Chris Briggs, walks you through multiple options out of the Pistol. Briggs even includes a set the Los Angeles Clippers ran for Blake Griffin. His version of the Pistol has evolved over the years as he developed new options to fit the skill level of his players. He has also found opportunity to teach his players additional individual skills that enhance the execution of this offense.

5-on-0 Walk through

You will learn how to attack the defense with each different read/call from the bench. Coach Briggs explains his key teaching points and which specific actions to call against different defensive strategies, such as switches, zone, hard hedges and isolations. He uses ball screen actions, wide pin-downs, lobs, clear-outs and dribble hand-offs to force defenses into tough positions on the floor.

5-on-5 Live Action

After Briggs walks you through each action 5-on-0, he runs the plays against a live defense. Following each live possession, he talks about the different counters you can use from each set, such as slipping screens, changing the angle of the screens, turning the corner to go, or utilizing the dribble hand-off.

This video is a great resource for coaches at all levels. Coach Briggs gives you a complete look inside his version of the Pistol Offense. He carefully teaches all the options off the basic Pistol action, as well as nine set plays that can be used when your team needs to score. If you've been wanting to run the Pistol, you'll find what you need here!

This is a really good video. He shows his basic pistol then other pistol sets. There are several of them. It's a simple offense and he does a really good job explaining it.

Coach Briggs does a good job explaining this increasingly popular set. None of the actions themselves are overly complicated but he gives you a ton of them. I'd be surprised if any high school team could remember all the calls given, but there are enough different ones presented that most coaches can find several that fit their personnel. I like the fact that the initial set looks like Horns but most of the attacks come from the corners not the top.

Really like this one. I like that he puts defense on the floor early to defend the offense so you aren't just watching it skeleton, which doesn't help much after you learn the basic idea.

Caveat: I always thought "Pistol" action was a DHO followed by a ball screen.

Briggs runs his pistol a little differently. His is what I was taught was called " Chicago" action; one of his wrinkles is a screen THEN followed up with a DHO. Still a great action.

But his base offense doesn't start with a DHO but with a pass to the wing followed up with a possible handoff back to the original passer coupled with a flare screen.

I really like this and might use it as a counter to my base
Pistol offense.

He doesn't show this as a true continuity offense but you can easily make it into one.

Do you have 4 guards that can handle a little and want to run ball screens but want a little more movement? Check this one out. Definitely a good buy.
