with Dave Love, Professional Shooting Coach;
NBA Shooting Consultant with Phoenix Suns (2009-10), Oklahoma City Thunder D-League team (2010-11), Cleveland Cavaliers (2013-14) and Orlando Magic (2014-present)

The mechanics of shooting a basketball are some of the most complex in all of sports. So many players have issues with their shot. Poor footwork, a flaring elbow or even how a player holds the basketball can lower shooting percentage. Dave Love has the answers for you.

Dave Love, a shooting specialist for NBA teams and players, has worked with some of the world's most talented players. In this basketball video you will learn the 23 most common shooting errors and what causes each error. Coach Love will explain how to correct every error, leading to a more accurate, consistent shot.

Positive Power

The first and maybe most important strategy that Coach Love introduces is the idea of positive power. He addresses how using positive power with your shot will almost always produce the right result. This power comes from the shooter's feet, body, arm and hand. All elements of the shot must have positive power in order to consistently knock down your shot.

Coach Love also shares the points of a bad shot where "negative energy" is being used. These two concepts seem a lot bigger then they are, and Coach Love is able to help you see when positive and negative energy are being used. He also provides drills to reinforce positive power concepts.

Common Shooting Errors and Corrections

Some of the major mistakes that are made when shooting are as follows:

  • Rotating the feet on the finish
  • Thumb and pinkie down
  • Bad rotation on the ball
  • Flat and short shots
  • Elbow issues
  • Proper hand position on the ball

Coach Love attacks each issue individually, explains why they're bad and what they are doing to affect the shot negatively, and finally teaches how to fix them. If you've been in the gym with today's youth basketball players, you've seen each and every one of these bad techniques. Now, you will have the tools to fix them!

In order to be successful in basketball, it's a must that you can at least knock down an open jumper. If you or a player of yours has a flaw in his/her shot and are not consistently knocking down open jumpers, then one of the many tips provided in this video is almost assured to help you fix your issue.

"NBA shooting coach Dave Love presents How to Correct Common Shooting Errors, an instructional DVD for basketball coaches and players. Very, very basic. Slightly more in depth than your BEEF you learned in middle school PE.
