Coach Smart covers the cornerstones of his shooting and skill development philosophy in this excellent video. Smart demonstrates six drill progressions to help players hone skills needed to play at their optimal level. Smart believes that the "One Step" teaching method is crucial to being effective for offensive players and focuses on the two main concepts of the "One Step" method: Sitting on the dominant pivot and "selling opposite." Players are taught to attack shoulder to hip, make a big "low and long" first step, and then turn the corner. Smart shows the first step, one-dribble drill, which works on improving this skill. In the primary/secondary phase of skill development, the offensive move is dictated by how the defense reacts to the initial move. When defenders take away one direction on the dribble, it opens the door to drive in the opposite direction. The freeze move, split move, and attack/jump stop/step through move are all part of the "One Step" teaching progression. Shooting fundamentals - emphasizing full elbow extension and follow through - highlight the instruction as players demonstrate skills on the floor. The lie-down shooting drill and the one-hand "Beat the Pro" shooting drill are keys to successful shooting. This video is focused on the finer points of offensive skill development. By practicing within the "One Step" philosophy, players can learn to optimize their opportunities to drive by defenders and finish strong.

This unique video on screening introduces the concept of "selling opposite" as a big part of screening success. Legendary Canadian coach Dave Smart discusses screening terminology, different types of screens and benefits of this offensive tool in this presentation. The advantage in screening goes to the offense by implementing the down screen, back screen and on ball screen. The back screen gives the cutter an opportunity to basket cut, back cut or flare. Cutters are taught to cut "shoulder to hip" when accepting a screen and driving the elbow into the back of his teammate. Creating good match-ups for the offense is a main focus of a good screening team. The goal is to put each player in positive situations on the floor based on their specific role. Against switching defenses, Smart demonstrates the slip technique and the ability to gain match-up advantages. Smart demonstrates five ways the defense may attempt to guard the ball screen, and how the offense can benefit in each situation. The screen has become an offensive tool for coaches who emphasize it and incorporate it into their style. This video will give coaches multiple options for using screens to break down the defense, create mismatches and score more baskets.

These DVDs with imported photographs are walk-through lectures detailing 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 techniques. There are very few drills shown and very little live action. There is no 5-0 or 5-5 play. This is advanced information for experienced coaches wanting to deepen their basketball knowledge. Coach Smart really understands the game and holds nothing back in his explanations. Just remember, it's not how much you know but what your players can do in the heat of the battle that matters.
