I started out as a motion offense person, but found it challenging with players (15u boys & 12u boys) as it gave too much freedom. With the Read and React offense (Rick Torbett's method) it was easy to teach, and provided structure as it teaches players to react to what the ball handler is doing.
For example, if the person with the ball dribbles at you, you must back door cut, or if the ball handler passes the ball, you must basket cut. Simple rules gave structure in which helped our offense.
I wasn't a fan of the layer 4 of Rick Torbett dribble drive, which is more of a circle movement, so I always went back and forth with a 4 out 1 in Dribble drive for this method.
I love this video because it gives the simplicity of teaching out to play basketball. The Dribble drive itself we use as our skills for 2 foot layups, and being more aggressive with attacking the basket. When we were in motion too much, our boys would attempt to shoot too many 3's.
The video itself is probably the best at teaching the offense. Not too many bells and whistles, but just straight to the point. Phase 1: He shows the offense as a whole. Then brings out 2 defenders at to show the dribble drive and pitch pass (or kick-up).
Phase 2: is the pass and cut. This should be the foundation of all basketball in my opinion. IF the pass and cut is still hard to guard in D1 and NBA, then it will be difficult to guard with younger groups.
Overall: Great teaching, and the PDF is a bonus to use and study.
