Avoid a Takedown with a Good Sprawl!

By dustin.moscoso - Last updated: Monday, September 1, 2014

Coach Eric Akin demonstrates an essential skill that every wrestler needs to understand and perfect – sprawling.  At some point in a match, your opponent will take a shot and you’ll need to sprawl to avoid a takedown.  Coach Akin points out the key fundamentals to perfect your technique.

Sprawl Drill

Coach Akin begins the sprawl with a leg curl motion-pick up your feet when opponent attacks your legs.  This should be your original reaction to a leg attack.  Next, to execute the sprawl, drop the hips straight down to the mat. The mistake commonly made here is to jump up slightly and come up on our toes instead of dropping the hips straight to the mat.  Next, with the opponent underneath your hips and chest, square the hips so that the hip bones are parallel to the mat. Finally, finish the sprawl skill by circling away from the leg that was attacked in a manner similar to a bear crawl, but with the hips in and head up.  Coach Akin cues his wrestlers to “chase his tail.”  A good basic drill that can be done at every practice is a sprawl drill, where wrestlers move in their stance and execute the sprawl when the coach blows a whistle or gives a command “sprawl” or “hit it.”
