In this segment 2008 NCAA Champion at Cornell, Jordan Leen, goes through three different set-ups. The set-ups you will see involve using the “Claw”, “Ankle Elevator”, and “Tilt.” Discover the keys of each technique in the following clip.
The use of the “Claw” technique is ideal for a weaker wrestler because it enables him to use his weight to control and execute this technique on an opponent. The emphasis on the “Ankle Elevator” is to elevate the ankles so that you can place your safe leg in place, open up the opponents’ hips to execute the short leg.

With University of Virginia Head Coach Steve Garland you will learn about the intangibles of drilling and how to drill properly. The ‘Underhook Drill’ shown by Coach Garland is a creative way to get wrestlers warmed up and ready to go without the mindless slogging (slow + jogging) so common in practice rooms of today.
Wrestlers will become much more comfortable with the underhook position and have more fun as the warm up becomes more of a game. Preventing staleness is a key for being successful in wrestling and Coach Garland has shown a great drill to get the room fired up and excited to practice.
Former All-American and current Head Coach at Virginia, Steve Garland, will show you how to secure more double leg takedowns. The ‘Trail Leg Drill’ is something your wrestlers can practice to work on the setup phase of a double leg.
Avoid going on both legs and using just your arms to get a double leg takedown.
Steve Garland is entering his eighth season as Head Coach for the University of Virginia. Garland guided the Cavaliers to the 2010 ACC title and was named 2010 ACC Coach of the Year. In his videos you will see new, creative and fun ways to work on old positions as well as develop techniques to defend against the leg riders.
In the third video below, Alex Clemsen, will teach you how to be more aggressive on the mat and improve your defensive skills. He is entering his fifth season as an Assistant Coach for the University of Virginia. As a wrestler, Clemsen was an All-American at Edinboro and a four-time NCAA qualifier.
